Went to an ACA "dog show" Fraud alert!

I've loved dogs since I was 2 and have devoted way too much time reading about them and taking care of them. My three seniors are all rescued mutts. I want my next dog (not soon) to be a purebred Rat Terrier. So, I see the billboard about the dog show and, in spite of my better judgment, decided...

How to tame an adult guinea?

I have a (relatively) tame male guinea and I'd like to get him a wife. He's such a spoiled baby, I wonder if a flock raised hen would be aggressive with him. Is it possible to teach her his basics? He knows his name, understands "Go to your room ", thinks I'm his mom and mostly comes when I call...

    Chicken disaster preparedness

Does anybody make plans or take other measures to prepare for natural disasters? When my neighborhood was under a voluntary evacuation notice last spring, I ended up (at my son-in-law's insistence ) huddled in their basement with 3 dogs, 2 cats and 4 of my chickens after an emergency run to...

    Invisible pest

Three days ago, as I started my morning routine of getting my 5 birds out of their crates on the back porch to spend the day outside, something creepy ( literally) happened. It felt like crawly things going up my arms and ending at the top of my head. I inspected myself and all the birds and...

Meat bird ration harm other birds?

I have a full bag of Nutrena meat bird ration I hate to waste. My birds are a mix of layers (active and retired), a guinea, a rooster and a couple of banties. It's about a month's supply for them.

Can heat wave cause walking problems?

My little Porcelain D'uccle hen stopped standing and walking when the temps were super high. She was on a shaded porch with a fan. I brought her into the air conditioning about a week ago but I don't see significant improvement. She's eating, although not as much as I'd like. She can't balance...

    Odd color on rooster comb

My rooster is a two year old BO that seems to be in perfect health. Every day or two the back of his comb turns really dark ( almost black). Then it goes back to red. Anyone know why?

Safe way to eliminate "Arachnophobia" quality spiders?

My boys have pitched in and we're finally building a coop big enough to house everybody. The problem is that I'm redoing a really old chicken coop that I've used to store non delicate items. I don't know if it's because of the recent flooding but I've never seen so many spiders! We found...

    Run size for guineas

I'm building a run for two guineas. How big should it be to keep hem from pacing and struggling to get out-- or will they do that no matter what? They can't free range for several reasons.

Has any one tried Shoo Tag ?

Hopefully someone in a heavy flea area? The science is pretty iffy. Frontline doesn't work on my guys. I hate the idea of using it on seniors, anyway. With 3 dogs and 2 cats (10-14 yrs) I'm not looking forward to spending more summer evenings with a flea comb.

    Jeffrey

Jeffrey was a lone guinea keet in the bin at Orscheln's in Sept. '09. I bought him an EE pullet for company and brought them home and raised them in a brooder in my bedroom. When he was old enough to go outside, I put him with my 2 BO/Leghorn crosses and all was well until spring. Last spring...

    Calm a neurotic rooster?

I have a beautiful 1 1/2 year old Buff Orpington roo with serious issues which are now affecting his health. He is so mean to people and hens that he has to live in a 5x 12 ft bachelor pen. He crows when something upsets him ( like losing site of his girls, or somebody flushing the toilet- yes...

    Curiosity question: Generational parasites?

If a hen has worms and her eggs are hatched in an incubator, will the chicks have the same worms?

    Wet necks.

I keep my feather footed banties on shavings in a large indoor cage. Two of them have wet feathers just under their beaks all the time. If I drop the water dishes any lower, they joyfully fill them with shavings. Any thoughts?

Any tips on protecting my small beagle from the hens?

She's 9" tall & weighs about 12 lbs. My 2 BO crosses rush her when she goes outside, they'll even peck her and do a flying rooster kick if they catch her. I've tried "mopping" them and it works as long as I stay out there. It'd be great for her to be able to go out back and just putter around...

    Best treatment for tapeworms?

My little Porcelain D'Uccle pooped one out the other day. I assume it was a tapeworm. It was about 2 inches long and flat. I've also seen tiny thread shapes. Her breeder kept her outside in the summer but she's inside here year 'round. I think if I could get rid of the worms they would stay gone.

    Chickens protecting cardinals.

A pair of cardinals has a nest in the honeysuckle near the chickens. I've been trying to keep an eye on my cats and make them leave the nest alone. This morning I left them outside because they seemed content at the back of the yard. A little while later, I heard a huge chicken ruckus but I...

    Need Okie advice

I currently live in MO and I know racial attitudes vary here by region. There's a giant difference between the Ozarks and the bootheel. My family is considering a move to Oklahoma -specifically Muskogee. We are an unusual looking bunch. I can't count the number of times we've been asked "What...
