Silkie chicken, about 3 months old or so. Its eye is slightly cloudy, it's keeping it closed much of the time. It doesn't feel too bad - it's eating and walking around - but not quite up to par. Help?
The chick is a few days old, and doesn't want food or water. Its crop feels "balloony." Not like its sibling, which has a full crop. Any ideas? I am sure I'm going to lose it unless I can do something quick. It's hen-raised, free range, and fed chick starter from the feed store.
I have a friend interested in keeping pigeons.
She needs a larger size breed, because the aviary she has is covered with 2x4 welded wire.
She doesn't want them for meat, just for entertainment. Any suggestions?
Sometimes the ducklings will tumble upside down and have some trouble getting right side up again. Today I found a 3-day-old duckling dead, upside-down, in its own cage. Other ducklings okay. It evidently died while upside down, but they were all fine a few hours ago when I checked. I googled...
Is it a superpower that select people are magically born with?
I just spent 7 hours processing 6 roosters (and I haven't even cleaned up yet).
I TRIED and TRIED and TRIED. I looked up every link on the 'Net discussing the subject that I could find, I practiced on dead chicken heads, and...
For sale in North Alabama:
5 crossbreed cockerels (couple months old), $8 each.
The above are all crosses between Buff Orpington and one of the following breeds: Rhode Island Red, Barred Rock, White Leghorn.
3 Buff Orpington cockerels, $9 each.
Muscovy ducks sold.
Thanks for looking!
One of our roughly 10-week-old chicks is much smaller than the others (though this whole batch varies widely in size). One of its eyes is watery and often closed, like it's infected or something. It's not "goopy," just watery, and the eyeball itself looks pretty normal. It's been like this for a...
Two questions.
1. What does a loft need for the comfort and health of the pigeons? Size, light, ventilation, roosts, nest boxes...?
2. What does a loft need for the convenience of the owner? Doors, ceiling height, nestbox height...?
Please be brief in your answers. Thanks!
I'm looking for some chocolate pied Muscovy ducks in or near North Alabama. I would like a breeding pair or about 6-12 hatching eggs, at a reasonable price. I would prefer eggs, but I realize it's near the end of the laying season. Thanks!
1. Is it better to keep the phases separate or together for breeding, and why?
2. My understanding is that the phase gene is sex-linked, and silver-phase is dominant. Therefore, my guess is that gold drakes and all females are "pure" (i.e. can only pass on the color phase they show) whereas...
I have two ducks available, each with her 8 ducklings. Will not separate babies from their mother. Buy one family for $60 or both for $110, prices firm. Drake is not available.
Mama hen hatched out 10 eggs, and then left the last 3 on the nest. Two sloshed, so I knew they were rotten. The last I wasn't sure about. So I candled it, didn't see much, and then very carefully cracked a little hole near the large end. Turns out there is a live chick in that egg! I guess it's...
My duck was mauled by a dog and sustained minor injuries. Now she has a green lump under her skin at the site of injury. Should I lance it at some point? If so, when? Help! She seems to be feeling okay.
We just received our order of Welsh Harlequin ducklings from Holderread! They are mixed silver and gold, males and females. Is there an expert out there who can help us with what phase and sex they are?
Here's a link to the Picasa web album...
We found one of our chickens just lying there, not getting up. We picked it up, and its leg is hanging limp, apparently from just above the hock joint (is that what you call it in chickens?) down. We gave it its own cage with food and water, but do I need to splint it?
I have a setting Muscovy but no fertile duck eggs yet, so I put chicken eggs under her. Will she be motherly at Day 21 and not reject the chicks? After they hatch, I am planning to put her in a place with a water dish raised on a platform, and no swimming water, so she won't try to teach the...
White Leghorn Father, not sure about the mother
Not only does he have the red, he has a few small barred feathers.
I know for sure his father is white leghorn.
Mother possibilities are:
Rhode Island Red
Barred Rock
A hen that looks exactly like a RIR, but may not be purebred?? May have...
During the summer I had 4 Buff roosters, and at least some of them were frequently breeding with the hens. In the fall I got rid of 3 and kept my favorite. He tries now and then, and every so often succeeds, but I don't think the eggs are fertile - at least, I know some of them aren't. I have 12...
When Buffy and her chick Dot started sleeping in the chicken house with the rest of the chickens, it took a few days for them to adjust. Buffy wanted to roost; Dot wanted to snuggle under her. They finally got it figured out. :)
