Any guesses on the first pic? It's visually halfway between the known hens and known males (pics 2 and 3 respectively) but doesn't have any noticeable behavior pattern.
18wks old.
Easter Egger rooster crossed with White Leghorn, I have 9 babies at 6-1/2 weeks and 4 appear to be male. At least one is already crowing, is this normal? The father crows both day and night. It might already be time to give away the males
One "Easter Egger" juvenile rooster available, that I hatched April 1st, 2014 from eggs supplied by my own flock. He has a pea comb (triple-crown) and yes he crows from time to time. He has yellow legs and no tufts. The mother hen is a golden EE while the rooster father EE has the same feather...
I know to keep the eggs cool and dark, is 60-63* too warm?
The basement doesn't get any cooler than that. Outside temps are in the teens.
It will take me 5-6 days to have enough eggs to try and start incubating, and keeping them in the living area (at 70*) is probably not the best way to...
I know it is a rooster, and he is massive compared to my RIR and mutts. Was told it is most likely an Araucana. Any confirmation? Supposedly he was a show bird 2 years ago (I got him from a friend who had a friend who got rid of him because the family hated all the crowing).
Very calm...
1.5yr old RIR rooster with a bad temper and one eye.
1.5yr old RIR hens (2) good layers.
I'm moving this weekend and can't fit them in with the rest of the flock at my new place. I'll eat them if I have to, but I'd much rather they go to a good home.
I've got a +1 year old flock of 13 hens (9 RIR & 4 mutts) plus a monster RIR rooster. The flock usually divides over the day, with half sticking with the rooster and the other half wandering off on their own (mostly the mutts).
A friend of mine knows someone who needs to get rid of their...
One hatched today while I was at work (due on Sunday) and there was a lot of yolk left over - of course the chick fell asleep in the puddle and is glued to the floor with several coils of umbilical on the outside. I've been applying a damp paper towel (warm water) to soften the gluey yolk but...
I've got the last one just coming out of its shell. The others hatched over the past 36 hours and they are pecking the snot out of it. Should I segregate it for a few hours or let nature run its course?
I can add a small divider in the bator.
Came home from work today and found my dominant mutt hen (spurs and all) with a serious case of prolapse, almost 2" and bloody. The others were pecking her senseless every time she turned her back. I separated her, got out the gloves, calmed her down, and gently put her back together. She...
Why can't it be Sunday yet?!?!
I started with 19 of the biggest eggs from my own flock of 8 RIR and 5 mutts (plus 1 RIR rooster) and discarded the infertile/dead during the candling process. It appears that about 50% were fertile and only half of those made it to lockdown. I had a temp spike...
My work/home schedule won't permit me to turn the eggs more than twice a day (I have had no luck training the dogs to do it). I'd like to hatch a few chicks to replace some of the older flock.
Should I go for a no-turn incubation or turn them every 12 hours? Why?
I have 13 hens, 8 of which hatched in April. Yesterday marked my first "100% lay day" with the little mini in the middle! I think the addition of a 25W bulb for 4 hours each morning has helped them along.
Store-bought eggs? no comparison!
I have 5 hens that I can't ID, the eggs are various shades of brown and they reliably lay once a day.
Their legs are brown, not yellow, and they are slightly smaller than my young RIR hens.
4 of them are colored alike and look like this:
The 5th hen is similar to the others but...
New to the forum and checking in.
I've got a small flock of 14 birds consisting of 8 Rhode Island Red hens, one RIR rooster and 5 hens of unknown type. The RIR hatched in April, the other 5 hens are close to 2 years old (a friend gave them to me over the summer).
Pictures of the unknowns are...
