Quack, one of my Buff Orpington ducks, has in the last month developed a growth of sorts on her bill. (See pic) After researching this forum and via Google, I'm still unsure as to what it is, why it formed or, most importantly, how to treat it.
She exhibits no other symptoms with the growth...
I'm a backyard chicken farmer. 2 dogs have the run of our backyard and, as such, we don't have a varmint issues. Also, there's a cat that roams the grounds - so no mouse/rat population to speak of (anymore). The occasional gopher will wander in, but not too often.
My chickens free range...
Primarily for you "Central-state" Californians out there - although perhaps some of you
order out of state - do any of you order feed from Modesto Milling in Modesto, CA?
Spoke with one of their reps earlier today. Seemed solid and knowledgable. Also,
the prices look very competitive...
Is it just me or... Does anyone else feel as though Goldie Hawn might just pop
out at any second and say something, well, completely stupid?
Whats the dealio with the new motif, oh webmaster, my webmaster?

I've nearly completed an automatically recharged, chicken nipple-based, water distribution
system for the girls. However, I've been observing some interesting behavior over the past
3 weeks that has me questioning the entire project.
My nearly 10 week old chicks have only had access to...
To quote the late, great Jim Runyon, announcer for the "Chickenman" radio series, "They're everywhere! They're everywhere!"
Yesterday whilst my ladies were scratching about the soon-2-be-planted garden, I observed a few of them actively
hunting and eating something from the underside of...
Over the past few weeks I've moved the chicks from inside the house to
the garage. Then, I slowly backed off of the brooder heat lamp, effectively
weaning them off of full heat.
All the while I've provided my chicks opportunities outside; hours here and
there when sunny and temps were above...
At ~7 weeks Coral is mostly feathered (still dark gray!), gray-ish legs, 4 toes, extremely
small (the smallest of my 10 chicks at born within a day apart), and showing what I believe
to be a cushion comb? (Do the below images show a cushion comb? The infancy of a
strawberry comb? Other?)...
After reading a few posts espousing the wonders of mealworms and how/why one should consider establishing a breeding population of one's own to feed to one's ravenous, diminutive, feathered, egg laying, modern-day velociraptors, I found myself at the local pet shop staring into a refrigerator...
Much like a leather-clad street punk sporting a questionable 50's pompadour, another one
of my chicks (Penelope) is showing a rather prominent pink comb and exhibiting some
aggressive behavior. (The comb wasn't nearly as prominent last week and the chick was
fairly docile then as well.)...
Here are some updated pics of one of our ~6 week old chicks. Questions are...
What breed is our little Angel, and
Given what you see in the pics, do you think Roo or Hen?
(Inquiring minds and all.)
Note: In the past two weeks, although small, Angel has become increasingly aggressive
and...
My water pressure is straight off the main and tends to regularly blow sprinkler heads.
Has anyone stepped down water pressure to an automatic water tank valve and float? I'm considering hooking that arrangement up to my water distribution system down to the chicken nipples; in effect making...
mypetchicken has a page with information on a number of breeds.
Thought it was worth passing along for those trying to figure chicken/chick breed.

The other day my 3 yr old and I decided to pick out some chicks from our local feed and grain. I, of course, had a number in mind for our backyard flock and wanted 50% of the chicks to be high volume producing Red Stars (sex links). Here is an image of one of those 4 chicks:

Just getting into the game having nearly completed our backyard "Coop-torian" (our Victorian
styled redwood coop). With some eggs ID'd for order and an incubator on hand, my 9 yr old
daughter's excitement level increases daily.
Chicken breed interests:
