Hi All,
As I get older, I appreciate the simple wisdom of old timers when I hear it, especially of course when it comes to anything gardening or chicken related. That brings me to my idea for a new thread here on BYC. I'd love to know what/how the Amish tend poultry. Unfortunately, when I...
This is the drama at my house this morning. LuLu Belle lays her egg on top of Pearl. You can actually hear LuLu make 3 faint sighs as she lays. Poor dear.
Pearl has never gone broody, and the rest of the girls are not amused. :)
Here's a short article I found informative. I've been looking for answers for my own sick girl, so thought I should post this to possibly help others.

So, my little rescue hen (one of them) has been indoors for over a week in a heated cage and nothing I can do has helped. We are trying to determine if she has "fowl cholera."
Indications:
Sudden onset from appearing healthy to being extremely ill (literally overnight)
weakness
pale...
Hi There,
I was advised to buy diatomaceous earth last year and told to sprinkle it in their food and where they dust bathe for mite control(?). I know many use wood ashes instead, and I will next time but I already have a couple pounds of this stuff. Yesterday, I sprinkled about 3 handfuls...
So this is my little rescue hen, so I don't know what she is. Pekin? Coachin? Her wattles have gotten much larger in the last week or two and turned bright red, but I think that's also her improved health. She's really small, so I hope this isn't her full weight. If it is, her growth was...
I have two very sweet Ameracaunas who I love dearly, but just in recent weeks have decided being as loud as possible and throwing fits for attention is a good idea. The whining can be heard into my house and I am really starting to cringe that the neighbors might get angry. Oh hell, I can...
So here are four of my girls having a great time since the weather has been lousy and wet. This is the first opportunity in a long while since they've enjoyed a dust bath.
My Ameraucanas are complaining about wanting treats in the background. The two on the left are recent rescue chickens...
I hope you enjoy this video I took of our girls this morning, taking their first dust bath of the new year together. We've had a run of lousy wet weather, so you can almost see the smiles on their little faces.
The two on the left were rescued about 8 weeks ago, and are finally acting...
Hi everyone!
I am now so grateful for this site in a way I had not forseen. This morning, (about an hour ago) a raccoon was attacking my henhouse but I scared it away. I doubt it could have gotten in anyway as we have it pretty secure but one of my hens hurt her beak in a panic.
I was...
Hi all!
I am now firmly in the 'I hate squirrels' camp of people. I used to love them, I really did. Now that I have chickens they are a constant pain in the rear. The major trouble is this I think: my next door neighboor feeds them every single day on multiple walks in the neighborhood...
Hi All!
I have a group of 6 girls who are just my world... so adorable. Anyway, it's starting to get very cold here with lots of snow and below freezing temps even during the day. I would not normally be that concerned as my oldest girls are nearly 9 months old now, but I have two, four...
Hi All!
I spoil my little gang of girls so much, that I'm not sure if this is common or not but one of my ladies purrs to me quite often. It's usually when I'm checking on them, and at night. I always whisper a few "mommy" words to them and I often get that reply, sometimes in more than one...
Hello!
I have 6 funky/happy hens here in Portland, Oregon. I've been lurking for a bit, so now I'm looking forward to being part of this website. :)
I currently have 2 Americana's (Henrietta and Mrs. Beasley)
2 buff Bantam Brahmas (Pearl and Lulu Belle)
1 white Bantam (Pekin?) of unknown...
