Heavy Breed Pullets - Around Lafayette, Louisiana

I'm looking for 4 heavy breed pullets or young hens to add to my flock. I currently have 4 Barred Rock hens and I would like to add 4 more. I'm not necessarily stuck on the heavy breeds, I just want some that will be less likely to jump my 4 foot fence. They do free range all day long. My...

    Quick Question about adding chickens

I have 4 pullets that are 12 weeks old. If I were to add 2 more chickens. Can I add full grown hens? If I did add, I would add 2 more. Would adding 2 older chickens to these younger ones prevent a lot of the mixing problems?

    Most Docile/Least Flighty Breed

In your experience/opinion. What is the most docile/least flighty breed? When I was first looking, I had found that Barred rocks were the most docile and least flighty of the reliable layers. You have any that are even better than this? I see in this thread...

    Feed Bin

Anyone ever used one of these or know anything about them? I'm mostly concerned about humidity. http://www.amazon.com/Tuff-Stuff-Products-KMW109-13-Gallon/dp/B000HHQAI2/ref=lh_ni_t?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Grower feed or go to layer a little early?

I have 4 Barred Rock pullets. They are currently 10.5 weeks old. I won't run out of starter feed for another couple of weeks. My question is, can I just switch them to layer feed at 13+ weeks or do I have to feed them grower feed? If I get a bag of grower feed, that should last me Through...

    Grass in the run Theory

Please tell me if I'm right, wrong, or a little of both. Every day I pick some fresh grass and put in the coop with my 4 - 7 week old Barred Rocks. I was thinking, by putting fresh grass in every day, it will help them from eating all of the vegetation in the run or at least slow it down...

Will I have to retrain my chicks?

My chicks are going to be 6 weeks old on Tuesday. They've been outside since 4.5 weeks. I had to train them to go into their coop at night. I had been leaving a night light on. That didn't seem to be keeping them in, so I locked them in the coop for a few days.......then the weather came...

    Barred rock - Pullet?

Here are some pictures of my BR pullets. There is one which seems to have a lot more white, but the dark parts are just as dark as the rest. She just looks a bit different, but I do suspect that she hatched a day before the others. Is it possible that she is a he? I hope not, but figured I'd...

    Portable Nest Box?

I'm building my coop and I put the nest box together. Can I leave it unattached so that I can move it easily to clean the coop? Or, will they rearrange the furniture on their own?
