Ok.... SOMEWHERE I stumbled on information about a surgery you can do to either chickens or ducks (do not recall) to the point of removing their testicles. I can not for the life of me recall where and more importantly what the process was actually called; so Googling is difficult at best. All I...
Ordered 10 Welsh Harlequins from them some time early March and they came in today! In fact, got a spare, just in case.. But, they all look really healthy.
I'm GUESSING that I have 5 males. I'm 99% sure that 3 are males by bill color [which are dark from start to end].. Two others have a...
They're a pair of Pekin ducks which I picked up from the "who knows what" bin at the local farm store. They're ROUGHLY 4 weeks old. Are just starting to get their pin feathers in their wings. One of them is fairly mellow, easy to pet and is getting a more pronounces [did sound like a broken...
Some folks in the duck forum had wanted to see more pictures of the duck hut I'm building so I thought that I would start a work log for it. You don't see many duck coops in searching, so another one wouldn't hurt.
Here's two of the reasons why we're working on this now. But the main reason is...
I'll be keeping the water OUTSIDE of the duck hut, but was wondering what you all do for food? And water for that matter.
Here's my hut in the works. Two side roof sections will be hinged. Center is fixed and will be a green roof.
So, food inside, water outside is my thoughts. Yes?
Also...
On, so I'm wondering.. If you mix green layers with a Buff Orpington male, what color eggs would come out?
Considering hatching some eggs to expand our flock and my wife wants more green eggs, so was wondering what they'd hatch out and what color eggs they might lay.
Any thoughts?
Well, thought I would post pictures of my ducks that I have currently. We ended up getting this pair since we would not be getting the 10 Welsh Harlequins we ordered until mid May. Also thought I'd show off my water mess containment system.
Seen here sitting in the water mess containment...
Ok.. So my thinking has shifted a bit and I'm holding off on a full yard fence due to HVAC issues.
Since the ducks are on order, I have 4 weeks [or so. was open on the delivery date] before they get here.
I've shifted to doing a movable, 32" high 2x4 rail/ rough swan poplar slat fence with...
I'm considering fencing in my 1.1 acre yard with a split rail fence [three rails] and was contemplating if this would work out for ducks. The ducks I'm considering are Khaki Campbell or Cayuga. Still weighing in on that.
I'm wondering though, what the minimum height would be to discourage...
Ok.. So... Chickens, I know... Ducks? Not so much..
So, here's my list of Q's.
1) I'm expanding my run from 128SF to 448SF.. Any issue with keeping ducks in with my 3.5x larger chicken run? Chickens would have 30SF per bird in the run, not counting ducks.
2) Duck houses... I know people...
Trying to figure out what design I want to do for windows in my coop. Opinions?
The TOP part of the window opens upward.. While the BOTTOM section will be hinged and will open outward.
Option 1)
This option uses three windows for the bottom. They will open like a tri-fold door.. The...
"Chinese health authorities are putting a stop to restaurants serving chickens which have been bitten to death by poisonous snakes and cooked up for a supposedly detoxing meal. The dish, served by a small number of eateries in the southern province of Guangdong and the southwestern city of...
Ok.. I KNOW they won't breed true at all, but what the heck does the offspring of a red sex-link rooster and a red sex-link hen look like?
Inquiring mind.
She... or he... is 8 weeks old or so.. For a while I thought she was just a royal pain, but have been leaning to her alpha tendencies as actually being a rooster..
Today I was working on the roosts and everyone was up enjoying their window seats so I was cleaning up.. While getting my tools in...
Ok, so I got these plum trees last season and planted them. Far as growth goes they're doing really well and are full and green. They did not bloom last year nor this year however and I'm not sure why.
Granted, we had the ice storm come through, but that was before anything even thought of...
For those of you who have egg layers or dual purpose birds, at what age on average do you end up processing them?
Just wondering what the general consensus is.. Having laying birds is fine, but when they slow down drastically I'd prefer to rotate in a new group.
What age can you switch them over to pellet food? Mine are roughly 5 weeks old now and their starter bag is just about gone. Can I move them to a grower pellet now?
I've also got three more in that batch which are around 3 weeks old, just incase that affects any answers..
