We recently moved back to New England. Used to have a flock of 30 before we moved to NC. Now that we are back, we are interested in rebuilding our chicky stock. We have one barred rock, but we are kind of late to get chicks.
Anyone in NE who are looking to sell or re-home pullets/layers...
I can't seem to get the humidifier to work. The water level is stagnant and the humidity is low the incubator.
I finally took the incubator off the humidifier and found another way to raise the humidity, but I'd like to figure out what is wrong. The tubing all looks good. I see no holes. Ran...
I have a Brinsea Octogon 20 Advance. Had some eggs shipped to me tip down.
How would I position those eggs in the incubator?
I see TONS of stuff about how to position them in egg cartons and homemade incubators but very little (and nothing definitive) about how to position them in an...
A half dozen or so of my GCs have lacing, but I have never heard of laced Leghorns or RIRs. Could they maybe be mixed with something else (Wyandotte, for example)?
Just wondering. They are pretty so it made me wonder. Thanks!
Hi:
I am looking for roosters/cockerels for my calm PBR and Comet hens. We live in Vermont so birds that do well in the cold are my preference.
Looking for the following breeds: Wyandotte, PBRs, Brahma, Buckeye, Cochin, Chantecler.
I am purposefully looking at heritage breeds. I am ok with...
I posted this on backyardherds.com, but I might get more traffic here...
We have a gilt and barrow that we brought home back on Memorial Day. They are both a good 150lbs at this point.
We reserved a baby piggy (gilt) for pick up in September (so now). We usually slaughter one spring and one...
I maintain a small amount of kefir grains, but it still, at the moment, makes more milk than I need so I have been giving the extra milk to the chickies (and our pigs). They seem to be ok with it, but I was wondering if anyone else does this and if they have noticed an effects, either positive...
Are there any seeds that I should NOT feed to my chickies? They are about 8-10 week pullets and they forage.
I have been giving them BOSS, which they love, but wanted to add in other seeds (and we use some in our diet; flax, chia, sesame, etc) so just checking to see if there are any we...
So I have a good lacto-fermentation going in my half gallon Ball jar, but I want to expand to larger container so I can feed the chickies more FF and I don't want to use plastic.
Any ideas of a glass container of this size? The only thing I can think of with a wide mouth/opening is a fish...
So I noticed over the last few days, now that chicks no longer need the heat lamps on (the ambient temperature is plenty), that when I turn off the light their room at night (when I go to bed), the chicks start chirping like crazy. If I go back and turn the light on they quiet down. Turn it off...
Just wondering. I like the idea of putting sand in the Coop, but if it is too much of a desiccant and nothing composts then I can see that being a problem.
Hmmm...or maybe the compost would be sandy and I wouldn't want to mix that with my basic soil...?
Has anyone used sand and composted...
I had planned to free range the chickens when they are old enough. Right now, they largely eat the chick feed and whatever else they find outside when I take them out there.
Once they are outside for good though, I am wondering how I will know if they are hungry and need me to supplement their...
So it is 80+ today and I brought the baby chickies (5 weeks old) outside. I have a play yard set up with a blanket over the top so I can keep them in and predators out.
They are loving it,pecking and scratching in the grass and dirt, but 2 or 3 of them are scratching up dirt and rolling over...
I took the babies outside for some grass, bugs, and fresh air. It was little chilly (compared to the 85 degrees indoors), but they had a blast scratching and pecking away. I set up one of the kids play yards and covered it with blankets to keep them warm. Very cool!
So I have some 2-3 week old chicks and I was thinking of taking them outside (if it is warm enough) this weekend and let them play on the grass. I have some extra large metal dog cages that should work fine to keep them confined.
Will they pick up grit from the ground? Do they know to do it...
So we picked up a bunch of chicks today: 20 Golden Comets, 5 PBRs. They are the most adorable things. For now, they are safely ensconced in a plastic pool doubling as their brooder.
In about 4 weeks, when they are ready to go outside though it has just occurred to me that we have a few cats...
Hi:
I am a newbie to chickens so forgive me for sounding naive, but...
I have an old sugar house/shack on the property that I'd like to turn into a coop. I believe it is just about 200sf on a concrete slab, and structurally sound. I will need to do some renovations (replace the windows, add...
Hi. I joined BYC previously a few years back, but my husband steadfastly refused to have chickens then. Loved the site, but couldn't use the info at the time.
Now though, our diet has changed drastically (Paleo mostly). We eat a tons of eggs each week and I have finally convinced him that it...
