    Automatic coop door

This door is a life saver. No more trecking out in the freezing cold first thing in the morning or worrying about the flock if you stay out past sun down. Just put up over your existing pop door, plug it into a timer, and roll over and get another 5 minutes of sleep with no guilt about your...

    Eye issues... missing? infected?

The other day while putting the chickens up I noticed one of our chickens had a really swollen eye. Since it was night time I didn't do anything but made a note to check on her in the morning. In the morning it was draining a lot. Her whole side was crusty from her wiping it off. I wiped it up...

    Who's scat?

We had a chicken's head pulled off through the fence run last night. The local predators I've seen are fox, coyote, and skunk. I'm thinking it would be a raccoon though I haven't seen one in our area before. Here is the scat - note is was run over with a drag before we noticed the kill. Any ideas?

    Another naming the farm thread

I've read through a couple of these and liked the ideas that were given. So now it's my turn. Some info ... The land is 5 acres, mostly open land with wildflowers. (I looked up the wildflowers and didn't like the names) We have chickens, 3 dogs (jasmine, basil, and barley), a cat (rocky), and...

Chicken coop and run in Denver area

We are selling our house and the buyers don't want the coop. Our new house already has a coop so we need to get rid of our current one. It is a 4x4 coop that is elevated 2ft off the ground. There are 4 nest boxes that are accessible from the outside, a large door for human access, a chicken pop...

    Colorado Hatching Eggs Thread

I find it very difficult to find local eggs/chicks on this forum so I'm starting this thread for everyone in Colorado to post what they have so local buyers can find it easier. This will work similar to the Crazy Auction BIN thread. Sellers post your ad, buyers quote the ad you want to buy and...

    Self Sufficiency blogs

Anyone have or subscribe to any good blogs about self sufficiency? I know I can google this, I have, but there are so many thousands of results that it's overwhelming. I'd rather get some suggestions that people actually find useful and interesting. I'll start, here's my blog...

    Processing tips from a newbie

We just processed 6 of our chickens with some friends as a trial run. None of us had ever done this before. I read the threads, read books, watched videos and felt pretty ready but learned a lot that first time. Things to have ready before you start... A place to hang the birds to let them...

    Easter Egger sex

This one is confusing me. I've been leaning toward roo since we got it a few weeks ago because of the pink comb and now the red blotches. However the comb isn't developing at all and there is no roo behavior. I was able to spot the pointed feathers on our last roo as soon as they started coming...

    "Rare breed" assortment from Meyer

These arrived today. What's your vote? blue andalusian, blue hamburg, or blue oprington blue laced red wyandotte or welsummer? has a very grey chest/belly white leghorn, white plymouth rock, or male golden sex link? (I think this is our meal maker, not part of the rare breed)

    Wing feathering in Polish chicks

Has anyone noticed a difference in the feathering in between cockerels and pullets in Polish? I have seen Brahmas and Cochins it's pretty plain to tell when the wing/tail feathers start coming in, the females get theirs a lot faster. Has anyone noticed the same trend on Polish? I have 12 5 day...

    barnyard mix - gender?

My friend dropped off 2 of her chicks (11 wks old) for me to watch for another friend until she moves into her new place. Anyway, my first look at them I thought the mix (some sort of EE mix - came out of a blue egg) looked like a roo. She said oh no, definitely pullet. I've had it for a week...

    full breed cochin or mix?

Looking for your opinion if you think this pullet is a full-blood cochin or if you see any other breed traits in her. The lady that we got the egg from has 3-4 cochin roosters and a whole flock of hens both cochins and others. Also this coloring is considered Blue, correct? Thanks!

6wk cochin mix roo or pullet?

We're thinking roo. He(?) has always been skittish. His comb and wattles just started coming in and they are larger than our other chicks and much darker. He has a different body shape too. I'd take a pic of his hackle and saddle feathers for you but they haven't come in much yet. He's really...
