    Bloody hen fight!

There is one long roost inside my coop but only one in the run so far. My chubby leghorn has claimed it as her own and God bless any other hen that tries to get on it. Yesterday morning I took a pic of her enjoying it as she looked so happy there. We left for a few hours and when I came back...

6 chickens, 3 days, No eggs.

Zero eggs out of all six of them. They went from 6 eggs a day most days to none. Can't figure it out. Today was the third day. I haven't changed their food. Their light is on 14 hours a day and has been since the days started shortening on their own. Water available to them all day. Just...

    Minus 4 this morning.

With a 20 below wind chill. I'm glad I'm home all day to keep an eye on my girls. It's generally pretty cold here, but this morning is a doozy. It's only supposed to hit 4 degrees today. I took a big bowl of warm oatmeal out to them first thing this morning and I'll keep changing out their...

    Now, that had to hurt!

Now I know what all that fussing was about out there! Poor girl. Keep in mind those others are lg/xl eggs. One of my golden sexlinks, not sure who. They lay some big ones a couple times a week, but this one sets a record for them @ 3.1 oz.

My sixth hen laid her egg today.

I didn't have time to check for eggs this morning before my doctors appt but when I got home I had eggs waiting for me. 4 browns and a little white one. The thing is I have 3 comets (brown eggs) and only two of them look ready to lay. The third has a barely there pink comb. Is it possible...

    My Little suburban farm

It's just everyday life for my grandaughter to go out with me in the morning and feed the chickens, clean the coop, take care of the dogs, weed the garden, put waste out in the compost pile. The difference is this is the suburbs. On the other side of that fence are neighbors that don't even...

    Coop done, birds in.

So we finished the coop day before yesterday. I locked the birds up in it yesterday morning and left them in there until today. I went out and scooted them out the pop door and into the run this morning. Some needed a little push, but they all went out. We were gone this evening and thinking...

My Golden Comets at 5 weeks. From the left, Lucy, Hannah and Hedwig. Their feathers are filling in beautifully. We Started building their coop today so hopefully they'll be in it by next weekend. The leghorns are a week older and I can't believe how much more they have feathered out than...

Feathers coming in, now I can tell some apart!

The feathers are coming in nicely on my 2 week old golden comets. One is darker than the other two and I can actually tell her apart from them. She's a beautiful reddish gold so far. So, she's the first to get a name .... Lucy. I'll have to wait for something different to come out on the...

    Which will be bigger?

I have 3 white leghorns and 3 golden comets. The leghorns are a week older and rule the roost at this point. The little guys scoot in and grab a treat when they can but definitely are not getting their share. I think I read somewhere that the comets will get bigger than the leghorns. If that...

    Chicks First Bath

If you had told me a year ago that I'd be giving a chicken a bath I just can't even imagine what i would have replied! Lil' comet had pasty butt. She was trying so hard to poop but nothing was happening so I gave her a warm bath and got the poop soft enough to pick it off without hurting her...
