female call duck with both wing drooping

My girl, Foo, had one wing droopy for about 1.5 months (she also seemed to get very quiet at the time). Now both are drooping. They (I have her and Puddles her brother, as well as Pearl, a blue swedish female. All are almost a year old). Both girls are laying eggs and have been for some...

help....what kind of duck is this?

I adopted two call ducklings a couple of weeks ago. I was told I really should get a third duckling, in case anything happens to one. Saw this little guy on cl needing a home asap. They had no idea what kind, said it was about a month old (no idea of sex. I am also unsure of the sex of my...

heavy molt or something else going on?

Early fall, my bantam went through a really heavy molt. During that time, the other chickens picked on her, would not even let her sleep with them (she actually began staying out, I would have to go into the run and then carry her inside.) During that time, she lost alot of weight as well...

Should I keep the light on?

Ok, my coop is 8x10, with 8 hens. My roofline is vented front and back (2x4's up on end, that opening is wired over to keep critters out, but let air flow through.) I have the run covered in plastic. So, today and into tonight temps are going to be -20F (that is actual temp, not counting with...

Does anyone use heaters in extremely cold weather?

I live in Massachusetts. My coop is 8x6x5, it is vented at the roof line both front and back, windows on all four sides. I am not using any heat source, but wondering if we get a really cold snap, should I be? I saw this and was wondering if anyone has heard of or used this and would it be a...

anyone ever heard of or used this heater?

http://www.sweeterheater.com/page4.asp I know not to really use a heater, but thinking if we get an extremely cold snap, I should have something. This seems much safer then anything I have seen. Anyone know?

    Our coop....almost done

This has taken a lot longer then we hoped, but I am so happy with how it is coming out! Just have to paint inside, put up the perch and poop table, then wire everything (including behind their 'privacy fence'....lol). The coop is 8'x6'x6' and the run is 8'x14'. We have 8 hens, 7 regular and 1...

had to rehome my roosters today

I rent and landlord said they had to go (too loud). I am very sad, but they went to a friend who is just down the road, they went in with 13 layers, so they seemed quite happy, at least. And I can see them anytime I want. Its very quiet here now....but at least they will get to live their...

can you use 'ice and water' shield for bottom of coop?

Instead of getting the blackjack (and saving money since we already have ice and water shield), could that be used for the floor of the coop? Has anyone else used it?

our coop..a work in progress (even if slow! lol)

Hubby has been ill, so it was at a stand still, but started back up again. Here are where we are now. Everything we used (except a few 2x4's and the wire, we got for free. The 'siding' is old stockade fencing we cut to fit. Inside in all birch. Let me know what you think so far. We 'hope'...

    my babies are grown up!

Not little anymore...but love them! (Had to seperate the two roos for a bit, as they are getting pretty aggressive trying to mate with the girls. We still have not finished out coop, hubby was very ill.) So they are very close quarters. They are about 15 weeks old now. Let me know what you...

    male attacking females

HELP! My bantam cochin has been biting my females, to the point I am afraid someone will get gravely injured. Someone told me something about a 'ring' that is used to keep males from biting. I don't want to cull him, but have to do something. Can anyone give me some advice? I also have...

starting to actually look like something...lol

Been busy the past few weekends between sons prom, son graduation (and the weather not cooperating at all), but finally got some more work done on our coop. Hoping to have it pretty much done this weekend (chickens will be laying inside if not before we do! lol) We started out doing a pallet...

OMG...one of my supposed hens 'cockadoodled' this morning!

I kept hearing this strange sound, couldn't figure out what it was, so went downstairs, sure enough, my only Easter Egger, who I have been wondering about the past few days.....(at least I think that was who did it, I think I may have 2 roos, my bantam cochin and now my easter egger.) So...

so bummed, I think my lone easter egger is a male....

They are just about 8 weeks old and her comb is getting pretty bright (in comparison to the other girls). I think my bantam cochin is a male, too, so that might explain why they tend to bicker. My friend said he would take any roos, but I love 'Crystal'. I have pics I have to download, will...

grow out pen (until coop is finished, which hopefully will be very soon!)

Girls are just too big for what they are in, so threw this together using things we had around here until the coop is done (weather is not helping!) Have to add roosting bars, but let me know what you think (it is in our basement, which is cooler then upstairs but isn't cold, so it will be a...

    question on vents

Hopefully our coop will be finished this weekend. I plan to have vents on all four sides (I have windows on four sides as well.) Now, we have the metal vent stuff, but I am now wondering if it would be better to just do long strips on all four sides up near the roof line, and just use hardware...

moving my girls downstairs into a huge grow out box tonight

Still have more work to do on the coop, so this will give us more time (and since it is cooler downstairs, it will be more of a gradual drop when they go outside.) Been off the heatlamp for a few weeks now, the oldest will be 8 weeks old next Wed. (and the others are one week younger). Here...

my babies are growing up...anyone else have 'empty nest syndrome'? lol

I miss the tiny fuzzy stage (not that I don't love them, they will always be my babies...just miss that tiny little peep stage...lol) From this to that in about 6+ weeks...crazy!
