I have one hen who is laying really odd eggs. The shell isn't smooth and it is getting longer and more ovular. It's to the point the egg doesn't fit right in a carton anymore. I'm not sure which hen is laying it, we have three RIRs and one BR that lay brown eggs.
"Lucy" turned out to be a "Ricky". He needs a good PET ONLY home. I hand raised him and love this guy a lot. He is ~4 months old. He would like a good home with a harem of lady geese friends, grass to graze on, and somewhere to swim/play in water. We are located in Aurora, Colorado.
We recently move and I am converting part of a shed into our new coop. I've read up a lot on ventilation, but I could use some advice on my specific coop.
Let me start off with some information on what I do have... we live in Colorado so it is a dryer climate here. The shed has a window that...
Does anyone else have a horrible time using the BYC app for iPhone? Every time I try to post or comment it takes an act of god due to all the glitches. I'm very frustrated and hate even coming on because it's almost impossible to be active.
Does anyone have any really stupid chickens? Like if they didn't have people taking care of them, natural selection would have removed them long ago? I either have a really stupid chicken, or a suicidal one, I'm not sure which it is. I know cats have nine lives, but how many do chickens have...
I use to have backyard chickens and found BYC to be extremely helpful. In January I moved in with my best friend, her fiancé, and her sister. Her sister had four hens (3 RIR, and 1 BR) and a rooter that I think was a mutt. They already had a coop and run set up (much to be desired) so I kept my...
Hi all, I am looking for Chinese goose specific care information. I've read up a lot on geese but there appears to be some conflicting information/breed specific information for geese. I want to do everything properly. I did browse through the Chinese/African goose thread, but I didn't find what...
Back in March my roommate and I went to the feed store to pick up some items. They had chicks, ducklings, and goslings. Our carnivorous pets are fed a raw diet and we already have backyard chickens, so we decided to get an assortment of fowl to raise for pet food. I'm usually good about food...
Hi Everyone,
I know this is grasping at straws, but I'm getting pretty desperate. My cat Nikolai has been missing from his Loveland, Colorado home for almost four weeks. He is an indoor/outdoor cat (learned how to use the dog door) and has gone on adventures before, but has NEVER been gone...
This week I found a little wild bird dead in my chicken's water container inside their run. I often see wild birds in there that go in for the food. I don't know what happened to this little guy, it was far too late by the time I found him.
Then tonight I was sitting outside with my chickens...
Let me first start off by saying, I understand scratch is a treat only, and is not healthy food for a chicken. I get that it should be fed out sparingly and not as the main part of their diet. I also understand that not everyone believes in giving scratch. I respect your opinions.
That being...
Just a few moments ago I heard the strangest noise coming for my chickens outside. Thinking there must be a fox, or a coon and ran out with my dog and a flashlight only to find... nothing. Nothing scampered away from the chicken run area, and all seamed peaceful. My dog didn't seam to notice...
Hi all, I'm pretty new to chickens, I got my first two chicks in March. Today I picked up an adult hen from my coworker who is downsizing. He also has quail and wants to give me some. I know nothing about quail. In fact when I saw his quail I couldn't believe how small they were! I know so...
Today my coworker asked me if I wanted any more chickens. He wants to get rid of his flock and knew I had two. I'm only allowed up to six hens where I live so my plan was to have these two for about two years, and then when their laying days fell off adding a new young chick, and between the...
I found these guys in my garden today. The green ones were all over some radishes I never ate. When I was pulling them up there were a lot of them around (mostly really small) but I found this one big guy. The brown one was on some wood over by the carrots. I am in Northern Colorado. Does anyone...
