Is it normal for one or 2 eggs to hatch and then radio silence from other eggs in the incubator? The other eggs *should* be good, but this is my first time incubating goose eggs. The first 2 hatched on day 29/30 and now we are on day 34...
Hey - so We have lots of chicks... and are kind of out of brooder space- but I do have these Tortoise houses, and one is empty. its 2x3ft and has a top (important when you have cats and curious dogs).. but my concern if the wood was ok. I don't know what kind besides "fir wood" anyone else use them?
the week of July 4th I ordered 2 dozen Blue laced reds wyandotte eggs from someone selling them on this forum. the eggs shipped the following week and of the 24 I ordered, 23 came in intact, one was broken. (no extra eggs were included) of those, at day 10 12 were found not viable/fertile, and...
so a couple of weeks ago I put some
Guinea eggs in an incubator as an experiment to see if i could even hatch them.. they were from a nest that my neighbor found.. so we don’t know when they started developing...they were put in the incubator July 6th. I candled them today and at least one has a...
ok so i've been back in the chicken game for about 3 weeks... and thought of this brilliant idea of hatching eggs.. my neighbors have an incubator (well 2) and i wanted to hatch some chickens.... we found someone that had blue laced red eggs.. so we ordered a dozen to be shipped....
since then...
Yesterday morning I spotted what appears to be a long tail weasel in our wood pile, which is not too far away from my chicken coop. I watched him for most of the day. He hung out mostly by the wood pile, and then a bit by our uncut wood pile, which is closest to the bird feeder (and further away...
Hey everyone, my neighbor found some guinea eggs this week. there were about 34 eggs in an outdoor nest. We candled them, and some were viable... but it has alos been 90ish and humid all last week and the birds had not been sitting on the eggs.
I took the eggs and put them in the incubator...
Hey all, so I finally got chickens again last weekend. (yay! the last 2 years have been rough with out my ladies)
These girls are a bit on the "older" side- the oldest is about 4 years old and the youngest is 2ish. the egg laying this week has not been awesome, we got 1 Sunday, 2 Monday, 2...
Hey y'all, re- introduction... I've had chickens since HS but, not the last few years because my hubby and I bought a house and we've been getting used to having a house and all that goes with it. we have finally built a coop and got 6 hens! we did get my parent's chickens.. they have about 20...
So Last weekend the chickens got moved into their "summer housing" This housing is 2 smallish coops in a large field adjacent to a horse field. They really love being where they are which is great, but now im having problems with their laying.
Most of them are laying in the box, but one is...
Soo I am now able to hatch my own chicks, thanks to Broody Roux and ... excited Philippe. Now I have chicks due in a week or so - we gave Roux 12 eggs to sit on, and i've never candled, but my dad drop one, and did say it was developing, so I know shes doing her job.
I am planning on raising...
Well apperently when 1 goes down, so does another... and another... I cant seem to get away from it.
I have a delaware that is lame on 1 leg. She eats and drinks, but does seem skinny (prominent keel bone) She Looks fine.. comb isnt pale, feathers are healthy.
She has a poopy butt, but I...
hey all, I have a chicken that has a hard crop. She's breathing with her mouth open and is slightly lethargic. She will let me pick her up, but does complain like normal. her poop looks normal. I've isolated her, not sure if i should put her on my porch tonight as it is gonna rain, or leave her...
Well the chicks are now 8 weeks old, and are looking like little chickens! I have loved watching them all grow up and watching them all color up! They are now in their own coop, and Momma Roux has left them to go back with her left over sisters (lost 2 big girls last week, it was devastating!)...
Any ideas on how to sparrow proof a feeder? My coop has a very big door and the feeder is just inside it, and I think that the sparrows have been eating the food more then the chickens.
Do I need to have the food out during the day if they are mostly free range, and I don't really see them eat...
So today we've experienced the first free range loss to my flock. I let my girls out this morning at around 5:30 am. There was nothing amiss when I went out, everything was normal- no one acting weird at all. My big girls are completely free range in the horse fields (chicks are surrounded by...
So I have 5 girls left of my dozen from last year ( well six with the broody that's in my yard ATM). The others died from Marek's we believe and these ones survived.. One of the hens doesn't look all that great. Her comb is pale, wattles and a bit redder but not much and she doesn't tend to hang...
I first got chickens about 9 years ago, at the beginning of HS- joined 4-H and somehow was able to convince my parents to let me get some chicks. (Mom was easy to convince and then she managed to convince dad :D )
My first chicks were from a local guy, we got a dozen day old chicks from him...
So Is it possible/ or a terrible idea to move the eggs from the incubator to another incubator/brooder type thing on day 18, when they don't need to be turned anyways? I would be setting up something like a plastic bin, with appropriate heat and humidity, and that way i can watch the babies...
So I moved my chickens to a "summer coop"- they are in a fenced in area near lots of horse manure and compost dirt and grass- bug and chicken heaven really. I've noticed that my girls arent eating as much of their layer feed. I don't know if its because they are getting enough nutrition from...
