Earlier this winter, even late fall, our young hens almost stopped laying altogether. Then even as the days were getting shorter, their egg production started to come back up again.
Is their loss in production from moulting or from the change in daylight hours? We do not have a light for them...
I know I saw this topic a while ago before I was getting eggs, but now I can't find it!
My hens aren 't going to the boxes yet-well starting now, and are laying them in the corners of the coop. Am I correct, do not wash the eggs until you use them?
Thanks!
Well, I mean not fertile vrs. non fertile, but chasing them around? We have 2 roosters and 19 hens, actually got 8 eggs today, but wondered if the roos behavoir negated egg production.
THANKS!
Well, we bought our chicks and there were 2 rooster chicks among them. Now we are finally getting eggs. If we are getting them daily and refrigerating them, will we see any signs of them being fertilized-like blood spots-etc.
I had a nightmare about fertilized eggs last night!
Hey everyone-Chicks are now over 2 months old and doing great. I am going to try to help my 8 year old pick out his chickens for the fair from our group.
Can anyone direct me to a breed standard website-beyond what is listed here? I'm looking at sending him with the Light or Dark...
We have a jersey giant pullet that is 5-6 weeks old and recently moved from the brooder in the basement to the coop with heat lamps. Everyone was doing very well, until now.
One Jersey Giant is tucking her head to her breast and now is walking backwards. Everyone else is fine.
Could it be an...
Here's my future situation, and after I've read so many posts here, I thought I'd post this of my own-THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS FORUM! Our chicks are only a week old now, so I'm just trying to get things in my mind now.
1) We have an 8x14 coop with their nesting boxes, windows and a roost...
One of our new chicks-a dark brahma has been bullying all of the others-the other 21! She's managed to pick at a couple eyes and one even bled. I put her in a seperate box with her own feed, water and heat lamp. This is the first day we've had them and I really don't want to keep her alone, can...
Ok, so I ordered Dark and LIght Brahamas, Australorps and Jersy Giants-2 of each. WELLLL, brought home those in 3 of each, plus Wyandottes, Buff Orpingtons, and Barred Rocks too for a total of 22 when I was supposed to get 8. Good thing we have the room. Had to convince my husband that some may...
We currently have 2 older puppies available for placements as pets, not for breeding.
Male Silky Terrier-black and tan-Pete-$200. Champion Bloodlines, great personality, 10 months old, vaccinations done until he reaches his one year birthday. No flights available for Pete.
Male Cairn...
We are looking at a border collie to help with our cattle. This one will be fully trained to cattle. How many here use a dog to herd and protect their chickens? Any advice? If it would be unadvisable, I can keep them locked in their run or the dog locked up while they are out too.
Thanks!
We live on a quarter in the country in Nebraska. We're looking at getting a few chickens, 6-12. Does anyone know if we need to do anything with registering poultry in the state of Nebraska?
We are looking for a few Jersey Giant chicks or even chickens in Nebraska. I have found a minimum of 25 to have shipped in and that is a little more than I am looking for. Local feed stores sometimes will have different breeds, but I'd prefer to get them either privately, from a hachery, or...
I am looking at producing a lower cholesterol egg-like the ones supposedly low cholesterol eggs in the store.
Are there breeds that are known for this trait, is it even a trait or are we looking at diet?
Also, any feedback on brown vrs. white.
I haven't had chickens since I was a kid and we'd...
Hello everyone-
I'm new to the board here and here's a little about us.
I grew up raising broilers, but it has been so long ago.
We are currently remodeling our coop, so we do not have our chickens yet.
We are looking for a good laying breed and maybe for our son to show in 4-H.
