I found my hovabator runs with too high a humidity (apx. 70 %) only using the center reservoir. It is also difficult to see if it has any water in it...especially with the auto cradle and I had to open the incubator to add water. So I worked out the following set up:
I'm sure I'm not the...
I have a real mixed batch of chicks from 3 different coops, 4 of which are mine with 2 pure Welsummers and maybe 2 Ameraucana/Welsummer crosses.
Specifically welsummer roo x black Ameraucana hen. Any Idea what these chicks should look like?????
My layers are picking (and eating) each other's feathers pretty bad and I think they are about to molt, so I picked up a bag of turkey grower as that is the only thing locally available that is higher in protein.
I think they are about to molt because they have slowed their laying way down and...
Excuse the newbie question (I am sure this has been asked before, but I am too lazy to do a search) but...can you mix layer quail in with your chickens?
I know a woman who had quail in with her parrots and they stayed on the ground and ate the spilled feed...kinda like a "mop up" crew. My...
I was talking to someone up here in Alaska about buying hatching eggs from the lower 48 States and she said she has a poor hatch rate with many detached (??) air cells.
Everything is air-freighted up here. I was wondering if it was a problem with the decompression of high altitude. Which...
Here are my Welsummer's first eggs.
They are about 5 months old. I thought they were at least a month away from laying. However, they have been pretty noisy lately. I guess they were telling everyone they were getting ready. Some are dark and some are pretty light.
I thought I read...
Excuse another marans thread (but I'm guaranteed to get a few responses).
I just butchered 2 5-month old black copper roosters and I was impressed by 3 things:
1. I was amazed by how many feathers these guys had. They seem to have twice the feathers as my other breeds (Welsummers &...
Have a couple extra Welsummer cockerels from Whitmore Farms in Maryland. Beautiful, healthy birds. Just starting to crow.
Would like to be able to breed back to them if anything happens to the one I keep.
Looking for banty cochins of decent quality...or maybe silkies.
Thanks,
Don.
I have 30 straight run chicks coming. Mostly Welsummers, some blue/black Ameraucanas and a few Marans thrown in.
I figure minimum 50% will be roosters, with a target of 10 layers of brown and blue eggs.
I will be building a 12 by 8 foot coop partitioned into 2 6x8 areas with seperate runs...
Looking at first incubator purchase and read someone said they had trouble keeping humidity up for hatching.
How do people feel about this incubator (the 20)?
We're still frozen up here. Don' have my coop up yet. Still in the planning stage.
I know from talking to others that I don' want my wife to have to walk through poop to water, feed, and pick eggs and will design with that in mind. I work on the oilfield and need her on board. Don't...
