Digging a chicken grave in winter

Before you tell me to dispose of the chicken in some other way, I know I can. But this is my son's pet and he doesn't want it in the trash and there's no room in the freezer to keep it until spring. That said... Any tips for digging a chicken grave in snow covered, frozen ground? I've read...

    Egg Bound or something else?

We have a sick hen. Shiny has all the signs of being egg bound- lethargic, penguin walk, etc. Her back side is puffy, and I don't see that listed as a symptom. I felt inside with a gloved finger, and can't feel an egg. We gave her a bath and fed her extra calcium (pic is my son giving her...

    Wazine and Invermectin question

I recently treated my girls with Wazine 17. Is it necessary to wait a while before treating with Ivermectin, or can they be safely done one right after the other? Thanks!

Loss of balance after Wazine treatment, and scaly leg mites

Can this be related, or is it likely coincidental? Yesterday, I treated my four hens with Wazine 17 (1 oz in one gallon of water for one day). Today, the oldest one, an almost 6 year old Buff Brahma, is stumbling a bit and seeming to have poor balance. She also appears to be limping a little...

Photos of chickens wearing costumes, please!

A local bank is having a pet costume contest where you send a photo of you pet dressed up for Halloween. I would love to enter one of our chickens, but I'm having a hard time coming up with ideas. Show me costumes you all have come up with for your chickens. I know they are out there! Or just...

Safe-Guard Canine Wormer- dosage for hens?

The only Safe-Guard wormer they had at my local store was for dogs. Each 2-gram envelope says it has Fenbendazole granules 22.2% (222mg/g), which I presume means each envelope has 444mgs of Fenbendazole. It is meant to be mixed with food, not water. So what would a dose for one bird be? I'm only...

Chicken dosage for powdered Safeguard Canine Dewormer

The store had no chicken safeguard, so I'm making due. Package says 1 envelope is good for a 20 pound dog. Each envelope has 222 mg/gm of 22.2% Fenbendazole granules. Since the pkg is 2 grams, I assume this means there is 444 mgs per package, yes? Can I just do the math and use the same amount...

UPDATED: Lethargic 2 y.o. hen, mucousy poop, "hollow" crop, droopy tail (EYP)

My 2 yr old Golden Buff started looking a little lethargic yesterday. Today I gave her the "spa treatment," (Epsom salt bath, fed her oatmeal with olive oil, which I was somewhat encouraged to see that she ate fairly well) and she in now in a crate in the house. She is still quite lethargic and...

Bad vent prolapse AND vent gleet. Great update! (contains even more graphically icky photos!)

Our favorite chickie, a 2 yr old golden buff named Goldie, has a vent prolapse combined with vent gleet. I noticed the icky rear end from the gleet, but didn't get around to bringing her in for a bath for a couple days. Kicking myself for this now, of course. After I washed off a big layer of...

New automatic chicken door- Gals missed their "last call"

I just installed a programed my "Pullet Shut" automatic chicken door. Last night they were in the coop by 9pm so that's when I programed it for. Tonight only one of them (I have four) was in at 9:00. The door opened a minute later for a second chance, and they didn't go in then either. I let...

19 wk old Chicken with one eye shut, warm head

My 19 week old Buff Brahma has one eye shut, is lethargic, and feels warm around her head. No discharge from the eye, no wheezing, no other obvious symptoms. Also no money for a vet, but I'm not willing to ax her just yet as she is one of only four chickens we own and my son loves her. I'm...
