I'm about to put a pretty ugly coop up (a converted chain link dog run) I want to plant something growing up the sides of the fence to make it look a little better but my guess is chicks will eat almost anything I'll eat. Any ideas on a climbing vine that chickens won't eat?
I have some quail that just started laying. Of course they eggs have droppings one them when I get to them. How should I clean the eggs so they are safe for my children to handle?
I am about to start on a chicken coup and I've noticed many people leave the inside of the coup unfinished. I was thinking that painting the inside would make it easier to clean. Will the paint hurt the chickens.
I just got 10 coturnix quail and I really didn't think about how to protect myself and my family from any "quail born disease". I have a 4 year old daughter that would love to handle the birds but I wonder how careful I need to be. Is a good hand washing enough or should I keep the birds from...
I know sameness is required when your trying to get you quail to lay but I'm wondering how much?
I know they need the same pen and the same food but what about?
Time of feeding?
Location of food and water?
If I leave a dusting bowl one day and not the next?
Change in weather?
What if I cut the...
I guess everyone who has quail has problems with the birds soiling their own water dish. A couple times a day I go out and empty the nasty water and give them new. I'm wondering if the birds would drink from a guinea pig/ rabbit waterer. I know some birds will drink from these things. Do you...
Yesterday my birds seemed to want to dust in their food. So I put a small box of sand in their cage. They LOVED it. They went nuts for the stuff. In the morning I found that the sand was full of droppings so I tossed it. Do any of you put sand or dirt for your cage kept birds to dust in?
This weekend I got my first 10 coturnix quail. The birds seem to be healthy, they have plenty of food and water, and they have plenty of room. But they look terrible. They have been pulling feather off each others backs and their feathers are just nasty. Is their appearance do to stress or are...
I am about to get my first quail. I've read that they need 11 hours of light per day. To get this I understand many people use lights to "lengthen" the day.
What kinds of light should I use?
I started on a quail cage this weekend. It is approximately 2 1/2' X 6'
Most of the lumber I'm using came out of an old garage I tore down.
I figured the hole thing would take a couple ours. So far I have about 10 hours into it.
But I am trying to make it Raccoon PROOF
I read somewhere that quail could gain enough speed to brake there neck before hitting the top of there cage. How tall should I make the top of their pen/ cage?
I live in Birmingham Alabama and I'm interested in starting a little flock of cotournix quail. I want to buy adult or almost adult birds. What should I expect to pay per bird and where can I get them?
Next weekend I've decided to make a quail coupe. My main reason for getting the birds is eggs. What type of birds would you recommend? Where should I buy them? Do you have an advise for the new guy?
I have been considering buying chickens or quail for my back yard. Whatever I put back there needs to be attractive, easy to clean, and safe for my poultry. I have heard most people put quail in cages. Is there a reason why they don't use coups? Any suggestions?
I am right in the middle of the city. I have been considering buying laying hens for eggs but I know I could not have a rooster because of the noise.
So what about quail?
I have eaten a quail egg before that tasted quite a bit different than a chicken egg.
My question is do quail eggs...
I am hoping to buy a couple chicks this weekend. Do I need to make an effort to keep the chicks 100 degrees or will they be ok inside the car at 70 degrees? The ride should be about an hour.
