I have portable chicken pens with an old calf hutches for shelter. During winter, I place them in a convenient location and stop moving them, and they work well. But I'd like to start lighting the pen with the laying hens at night in order to keep them laying through the winter.
Does anyone...
I've been doing some reading on alternate chicken feeds and read about using earthworms (http://www.avianaquamiser.com/posts/Earthworms_as_chicken_feed/)
Has anyone been trying this? I've started a tiny worm bin in an old plastic cat litter pail, using moistened old newspaper for bedding and...
I have a small flock of young Saipan Jungle Fowl a few months old, one roo and the rest hens I think. The one confirmed rooster seems to be the victim of feather picking. I'm not sure who is doing it. He's bigger than the hens and is not being bullied by them or anything.
I read that Saipans...
Does anyone raise Shetland geese? I've been interested since I raise Shetland sheep. I have a Pilgrim goose--- well, a gander--- now, but I've been seriously thinking about switching to Shetlands so they'll match my sheep. ;) I'm wondering if there are any breed specific things I should know...
Has anyone bought Saipan Jungle Fowl from Ideal? I'm hoping to get a new breed of chickens in the spring--- I'm down to about 5 of my old flock--- and was thinking of either Saipan Jungle Fowl or Thailand from Ideal.
I realize that hatchery chicks are not going to be as true to type as birds...
I got a batch of Chocolate turkeys about 2 years ago and ended up with one survivor, Imelda. She is very friendly and very maternal. At first she adopted the Silkie bantam chicks I raised her with as her babies, and went they died she bonded to other chickens and now she's mother-henning the...
I need a few Jumbo Guinea Fowl--- not the French guineas, but the Jumbos, like those sold in Murray MacMurray, which can breed naturally. I really want a small breeding group including males and females.
Because cost is a SERIOUS issue for me this year, I'd need to have some that are...
I have a new pair of Muscovy ducks and finally have them in a pen to themselves. Do they need a nest box? What kind works best for Muscovies? Should I put a roost in their house for them? They are tree ducks, after all. Any advice from the experienced is welcome & needed!
I have a duckling with a problem--- he seems to be falling over a lot. He looks up a lot and from that position sometimes falls over backwards. He's eating and drinking OK but he doesn't seem to get over this falling thing. Do ducks get epilepsy?
I'm looking to get in to Mandarin ducks this year and was wondering if anyone has any experience and sage advice about the breed. Are there any hints to get better hatch rates on the eggs in an incubator? (I also have an Ancona duck or two that are going broody.)
Also what about duckling care...
Just bought a pair of Muscovies and am building a new pen for them. Would a five foot fence (stock panel covered with chicken wire) keep them in, or should I put netting over the top of the pen?
Right now they are in a covered pen with my guinea pair and getting harassed by the guinea male, and...
This is/should be a picture of my little lame duckling (on left), who is only a couple of days old. He is an Indian Runner (presumably blue) and is pictured next to another one that hatched a day or so earlier.
Since hatching it has been dragging one leg. It acts like it can't bend the leg, but...
In my endless internet search for Fairy Fawn Indian Runners, I ran across an old listing of duck breeders which included a lady in TX who not only had Fairy Fawn Indian Runners, but Golden Fairy Fawn. Anyone ever hear of that before? (I'd ask if anyone had seen pictures but I haven't even...
I have had a number of different duck breeds over the years--- Indian Runners, Buff Orpingtons, Khaki Campbells, and now Anconas. Each breed has its own personality. I think I liked the Buff Orpingtons and the Anconas best, because their personalities are a little calmer than the Campbells, and...
Does anyone know of a source for Aylesbury ducklings or hatching eggs? (Stromberg's is sold out for the year.) I read up on different breeds in my Holderread duck book and I really would like to get some Aylesburys. I'd also like to hear about anyone who has experience with the breed.
I'm thinking about getting a battery brooder for raising duckings and other poultry in. I'm looking at the chick/quail brooder from Stromberg's (CQB) http://www.strombergschickens.com/products/battery_brooders.php I thought it would be neater and take up less space than the makeshift brooders...
I have some Ancona ducks from Cackle hatchery laying like mad things and I'd to trade some of them for hatching eggs from breeds I want but don't have.
I'll ship '6+' Ancona eggs (that means 8) by priority mail, individually wrapped in bubble wrap, in exchange for 8 eggs of other breeds on my...
I am getting some Indian Runner hatching eggs any day now. I used to have some Fawn and White Indian Runners years ago. The eggs I am getting are mixed colors from among the colors available from McMurray hatchery. But there are so many Indian Runner colors out there!
I'm wondering what colors...
I finally found a good tool to candle guinea eggs--- it's a small LED flashlight which is 115 lumens bright. I candled my guinea eggs at day 11 last night and clearly saw heartbeats in 17 out of 18 eggs. The 18th was clear/infertile.
The brand of the flashlight is Coleman and I got it at...
I used to raise Pilgrim geese but gave them up two years ago. I was wondering about getting geese again if I could get some Shetland geese. Does anybody have Shetland geese? What are they like, personality-wise? Are their eggs about as easy to hatch as Pilgrim eggs?
I got interested in Shetland...
