Are trees by the loft really that bad?

I am thinking about adopting a few white pigeons (fan tails) and some racing homers as garden flyers. The problem is that my only loft spot would be right at the edge of our woods. I read in this board that if they get into trees it is hard to call them back into the loft. If I only feed them...

    Coturnix vs Serama bantum

Just wondering if anybody here can compare coturnix quail vs seramas - if there is a general serama chicken. I just saw some seramas and a few were about the size of my quail. In fact, some were even smaller. Specifically, i wonder how they compare in egg number and size, noise, and space...

    What's the smallest bantam?

I was wondering what the smallest chicken is (assuming its a bantam)? And, do any small bantams lay reasonably well? thanks.

    What about mash

First, how do you make mash. Is it as simple as taking your choice of crumbles and adding water? If so, to what consistency? I assume it has to stay in the fridge- right, but how long? Do you add other supplements to it like grit and oyster shell or is that stuff best left on its own...

Help with newly hatched chick care

We just had a one day-old coturnix chick die. The temp in the brooder is fine, we have ground Purina game bird crumbles, and of course water with marbles in them. there was a previous post on apple cider vinegar in water, but besides that debate what am i missing? Do they need vitamins, oyster...

How long to wait after odd hatch?

Thanks to your informative posts we just had a our first hatch of coturnix! Problem is we only had 7 out of ~40 eggs hatch. I am sure this is due to my 2-year old learning to open doors and leaving the incubator lid open overnight. then we had a power outage the next day for 4 hours. so these...

    vinegar in water?

I have my first hatch due in about a week. The breeder who sent me the eggs suggests putting a small amount of vinegar in the drinking water (1 tbl per gallon of water). Is this common? I have never heard of that and wonder if I should do this. thanks.

    Plastic hardware cloth

has anybody used plastic 1/2 inch hardware cloth for coturnix pens? It is cheap and there are many colors for us urban folks who need to be design conscious. Not sure if it is suitable against predators or the birds themselves. Thoughts?

    Coturnix genetics

I am a molecular geneticist by trade (although with plants), but would like to play around with quail for a hobby. In bioenergy and agricultural plants we have nice germplasm resources that we often go to when starting a new breeding project. I understand this is not the case in cortunix. So I...

    Young quail and the cold

I am trying to decide if end of August is late to hatch cortunix quail and have them old enough to handle a TN winter. I plan on having them in a well built hutch-type aviary without lights (although I could add if needed). Alternatively, I could wait until spring but would like some adults...
