    Beach sand in the coop?

We want to try sand in our coop instead of shavings. Would it be fine to use beach or river sand? Maybe rinse it first? Opinions? Thanks!

Chicken math - To trade or not to trade.

My neighbor has three 17week old Easter egger pullets. I have 3 buff Orpingtons, 2 silver lace wyandottes and a columbian Wyandotte, 2 australorps, a barred rock and a faverolle. All 15-17 weeks old. I'm pretty sure an austrolorp is a roo, and possibly also a SLW. Since all of my neighbors...

My chickens suck at foraging bugs...

The subject line says it all. I don't know if it's because they were in a brooder so long or what, but my chickens don't have a big interest in bugs. I'll call them all close and flip over a log or brick for them to enjoy the smorgasbord of creepy-crawlies underneath. After some sideways glances...

    Sweet lone faverolle, bullied.

This is my 3 month salmon faverolle, Medusa. She's the only faverolle in my mixed flock of 10, ages ranging from 2-3 months. When I got her, I hadn't heard of her breed, and knew nothing of their temperaments. Honestly I just got her because the name was so interesting. They free range in the...

What do you gather eggs in?! Pics?

My oldest chickens are only 6 weeks old right now, but I'm already thinking about what to gather eggs in once they start! Wicker? Wire? What do you use and why? Have you tried any methods that you like more or less than others? I'd love to see pictures of all your different gathering tools...

    Identifying Wyandotte Chicks

My local grange said that they have assorted Wyandotte colors, so we're going down tomorrow to get a couple. (Plus a few other breeds! Yay!) I'm wondering if there's a way to tell what they'll look like as adults when they're chicks. Maybe someone has a picture? Or a useful link? Thanks!

Over full crop in week old Favarolle chick?

My Favarolle chick is about a week old, and today I noticed that she had developed a bulge at the base of her neck on her chest. At first I thought tumor, but now I'm thinking it's probably her crop. They're on medicated chick starter, they have grit in the brooder as well, always fresh water...

New chicks with pics, and a question or six!

Hello from Oregon! For my birthday this month, I asked my husband for a coop with laying hens. I didn't want to wait for eggs, and I didn't want to spend the extra money and time on brooder equipment and feed. Then yesterday we went to the local grange and they were having a deal where you get 5...
