There seems to be some confusion in the wake of current events, so I'd like to know what if any policies the forums have on family-friendly posts about people who are LGBT and their experiences, especially in relation to the rural/homesteading/self-sufficient/chicken-raisin. lifestyle.
I've got a chick in my brooder I've taken to calling 'Little Peep', because he is half the size of my other same-age bantams and hardly stops making noise. It's not chattering peeping, but louder "Hey! Hey! Hey!" peeping. You know the kind.
There is food and water, and I've seen him eating...
And of course, I was hoping someone might have idea about breeds/sex on some of them!
This is some kind of bantam. She's got a few dark spots on her back, some leg feathers, and her wing and shoulder feathers are coming in white/off white.
I have two of these, they are almost identical...
Some assorted feed store goodies!
I was told this was an OEGB.
And this is allegedly a Golden Laced Wyandotte pullet.
This looks to be a standard sized chick, at least it's bigger than the other young bantams I got. Some feathering on the legs, a couple of black spots on the back.
And...
I saw an ad on Craigslist-the nearest feed store is having a special! Buy 25 lbs of chick starter (which I will need anyway) and get 2 chicks free!
Or 4 chicks free with 50 lbs of starter!
I do not have a very large brooder, feed store. Knock it off.
I'm going to be checking out colleges in both those areas next month, but I don't know much about the towns. Would love to see some ideas for what to see/where to eat, etc.
Reply here, PMs, whatever you're comfortable with. Thanks!
Last time I had chicks I just had a few, and I set them up in my bedroom in a fish tank with a heat lamp and it worked great.
I have thirty-five chicks coming in March, and...I don't know where I'm putting them.
Obviously people do it all the time, but I am terrified of leaving a heat lamp on...
Has anyone done it? Is it worth the time and money?
I was thinking of getting a little order (25-35 chicks) in assorted breeds. Maybe some rarer breeds, some Easter Eggers, probably all pullets, then reselling most of them at around 12 weeks old. My thought is people might like to get some...
Someone on another forum asked that I do a post like this, and I was thinking I'd post it here as well. This is just how I do things, but I thought someone might find it interesting or useful. This first post was originally posted October 29th.
I talked a bit about showing/breeding rabbits in...
My new show doe, named Dian Fossey. My other doe is Annie Jump Cannon...trying out a science, math, and engineering naming theme for a bit.
She's 12 weeks old and has her first show on Sunday up at the Cow Palace.
I came across this today and thought it might be helpful or fun for some. It's a romance novel plot generator to help get you going! It has a few different genres of romance, andalso has a basic plot generator, plus an outline that it supposed to help guide you through writing a novel in a short...
For the uninitiated, here's a little background on numbers stations: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Numbers_station#In_popular_culture
There's a lot of buzz around the internet right now because UVB-76 aka "The Buzzer" has seen a sudden increase in activity-apparently both voice broadcasts and...
It's fair time here, and my boyfriend and I decided on a whim to enter two of our MyPetChicken pullets. We chose our two Silver Spangled Hamburgs and took them in last night, hoping for the best.
My dad was over there today to feed the rabbits, and told me my girl won Reserve Large Fowl. I have...
I'm showing poultry at the fair for the first time ever and I'm so very lost.
My boyfriend and I are each showing one of our Silver Spangled Hamburg pullets. There's an entry classification for Any Other RCCL Breed and since they don't have a class number for SSH specifically, am I right in...
I was going to post this to the last one, but it got closed.
Factcheck.org is a reasonably well known, non-partisan website that does what it says: checks facts. Here are seven 'supposedly true' statements about the health care plan that aren't. I thought it might be helpful to some folks...
BYC members, meet Agnes. Agnes came out of an "assorted pullet" bin at TSC. At first I thought Agnes may have been a Jersey Giant, but then some odd feathers showed up.
So...what is she? Is she in fact a she? I noticed a little iridescent green-ness on her back while I was taking pics today.
My order from My Pet Chicken came in today! These are supposed to be Rare Breed Assortment pullets, which according to their website could be: "aster Egger, any of our Polish varieties, Speckled Sussex, Chantecler, Naked Neck, Dominique, Black Jersey Giant, Blue Cochin, White Cochin, Golden...
Background: Ping is a ~2 week old Pekin duckling I purchased from TSC with three other ducks. They are eating unmedicated chick starter and water, and have started going outside during the day.
Okay, now here's what happened. I have the ducks inside at night, so I woke up to a squawk. Ping is...
