    GOOD dog story

Thought you might enjoy a story about a responsible dog owner/neighbor. Our coop/run is in our garden enclosed by a chain link fence. Last week, one of the girls ventured under the gate, and wandered onto the road between our houses. Our neighbors have a black lab that they walk off-leash all...

Do free ranging birds need more calcium?

My girls free range about 6 hours/day. They always have access to their layer feed, but consumption has gone down since they found the joys of grass and bugs. Lately, it seems like their shells are a little weaker. Do they need calcium to offset the free range diet change? Thanks!

Can your chickens eat butternut/acorn squash?

I have an overload of squash from last year. Is this good eating for the chooks? Do you remove the seeds & skins? All help appreciated. Thanks.

Chickens 'eating' the intended dust bath

2 weeks ago, I put a galvanized tub in the run filled with 1/2 play sand, and 1/2 DE mixed together. I thought it would be a great dust bath and keep 'critters' off my girls. So far, no one has taken a bath in it, but they all seem to be eating the mixture (and of course, pooping in it). I...

    Normal feather loss

I'm finding quite a collection of feathers in the coop and run. Just wondering what's normal for 11 week old pullets?

    Pellets vs. Pine Shavings?

We're using pine shavings (mostly since that's what they loaded into my car at the feed store). Anybody have a pro/con list for the pellets? Where do you get them? Also, can they safely go into the composting pile? What I like about the shavings is that they go right into my compost pile for...

Is it normal for chicks to sleep all day?

Have 7 four week old chicks. Today one just wants to sit on the perch, not even interested in egg yolk. Every time I check, she's roosting with an occasional preening. She can walk and get around, but just wants to sleep. Since the 'Dirty 1/2 Dozen' are feisty and HUNGRY as usual, I'm...

    Looking for best paint job!

Our coop is 95% finished and we're looking to paint. I know red & white are traditional, but we're looking for original paint jobs. What have you got?

    Help save a marriage

We've almost completed our coop & run. We have windows on three sides. So far we have 1/2' welded wire coverings, but HE thinks we need wooden slide coverings to close off and SHE thinks 1/4' plastic slide coverings would work. Do chickens ever need daytime darkness? Or for that matter ever...

How do you find the laws about predators in your area?

Wondering how you find out the legality of shooting predators? We take care of woodpeckers with (wink, wink) lead poisoning, but would hate to take drastic action on a neighbor's dog without the law to back us up, should the need arise.

How early do you clip chick wings?

18 day old chicks in the brooder can already fly. They usually only get 3-4" off the ground to do that 'touchdown!' chest bump, but today one got a good foot up and out the brooder opening while I was cleaning up. They're in a garage (thank goodness - I hate to think if they were in the house)...

How soon before I can take rocks out of the waterer?

New to this - wondering how long before I can take the rocks out of the waterer and still not have anyone drown. They are a pain to clean twice a day. And the chicks seem to be growing exponentially. By the way, they're 6 days old. Thanks for any help.

New chick owner in No. Cal

With our kids grown, we became empty nesters, so what's more natural than starting to raise chicks? (Groan) My husband is building a poultry palace he designed, and since I already bought the chicks (7 now 5 day olds of various coloring) he has added incentive to finish quickly. We're in Napa...
