This breed is listed as threatened on the livestock conservancy website. What I love about these birds is that they are hardy and active. The rooster is very calm and non-aggressive, while remaining watchful over his flock. As hatchlings, I found d the chicks to be very active and social...
I have a video here:
I tried to make a sling out of a sock, but he hopped out of it. The other chicks are starting to peck at him when he goes down. Thank you for any help to save this Dorking chick.
Just hatched yesterday, Saturday, 4 red Dorking chicks, 1 male, 3 female. Not sure if the male will make it. His toes don't spread out, and he's unable to stand upright. He rocks back on his hocks and is easily knocked over. :(
I gave him some electrolyte water and some liver water. He'll...
I think that this past week, my Dorking cock's wattles must have frozen together. He'd been staying in quarantine, so no nipple waterer available.
I wasn't aware of injury to his wattle. Today I moved the trio to their new digs, and that broke open the old wound. At 4 pm I took my bird to...
I'm getting ready to purchase an Incuview incubator. Am getting the distinct impression that I need a back up temp/humidity measurement device.
Opinions? I live In NC. High humidity in general. Spring and early summer we have windows open so the house is generally at least 60-70%...
I have a Brinsea Eco brooder and an infra red heat bulb. Just wondering how you all balance hatches where the chicks are 1-2 weeks apart in age.
Also, will the Eco brooder be up to the task, or do I need to add the heat lamp as well?
I'm ordering eggs and chicks for the spring. So far I've ordered Delawares, Welsummers and I'm considering either Ameraucanas or Cream Legbars as well as possibly Dorkings or some other meat bird.
Question is, will the excess egg birds be edible? Have you eaten them?
Thanks.
Reason I'm asking is that my 7 month rooster just yesterday started with one eye with bubbles. I got some VetRX down his throat today. He's very active, eating, crowing, running around with his ladies.
Nobody else is showing any symptoms of anything. Is wait and see a good plan, or should...
Hi all. I have an adult hen that I've had since November 24. Today I noticed that she has a slightly runny nose. She's also molting and has a whole batch of new feathers coming in. Nobody else in my small flock is showing any sign of anything.
So, good appetite, good activity levels, drinks...
I have no idea who it is, but someone is pooping drops that look like melted chocolate. I'm feeding fermented, and have been for almost 2 weeks. Is this of concern? They all are very active, talkative and curious.
Oh yes, they are 3 weeks old today.
My poor husband! I have these 6 meat birds, they're ready to get done, and I'm light headed, dizzy and sick to my stomach! I can't believe this! :(
Maybe tomorrow will be better. I know my honey will step up and do it.
My chicks are 1 week old tomorrow. Can I offer them stuff like chard and greens from the yard, or do I need to wait until they're eating grit?
They're on a finely ground chick starter and seem to be thriving.
Thanks!
I'm in the Piedmont area of NC. We're moving into our 85-90 degree days with lows in the 60's or so. I'm ready for my chickies, but I'm figuring they'll need access to the heat lamp during the night time.
My idea is to use a small exersice pen for the dogs and line it with cardboard to...
