Well it finally happened and now wanting to add to my flock

i rescued 4 hens a few years ago from a drug house across the street. Had NO knowledge about chickens at all but did the best for my hens and they lived a good life. One we found dead in the coop in March i think (she was fine when she went in so i don't know what happened, i suspect these hens...

My hen started laying again after a year??

One of my Easter Eggers just started laying again and she seriously did not lay for at least a year, otherwise healthy though. I don't know how old she or my other two hens are, they were rescues almost 3 years ago and laying then. Why would she not lay for at least that long and then all of...

Do i really want to add to my chickens??

So, i rescued grown 4 laying hens almost 3 yrs ago, they were abandoned, i knew absolutely nothing about chicken keeping but i learned. I have no idea how old they were but they appeared vigorous and healthy. They are free range but in a secure coop and run overnight and part of the morning...

Input on coop and run materials, please

I have 4 hens that i rescued a year ago. They have a large wood dog house for a coop that leads to a run encased in hardwire and chain link fence and a roof. The coop is filled with pine shavings and the run floor is concrete and i've provided a kiddie pool filled with dirt (and now will mix...

Help, one of my hens has a messy back side

Posting some ugly pictures here, sorry about that, i had to take them with flash when she was on her roost as she not keen about me holding her but she developed this maybe a week ago, i had thought a broken egg was stuck to her backside when she was laying but the mess persisted and most of it...

    Chickens and Spiders??

I don't know what sub forum to post this in so... i have 4 hens that i acquired in May and they free range during the day which includes around the perimeters of my house and i am wondering (and HOPE it's not a coincidence) if the reason i didn't see the usual influx of the "giant house...

well this sucks :( first loss

Just got my 4 hens early this summer, they were rescues and were always free ranged and stuck close to home. Left for an hour and came back and 3 were huddled under the rhodies and i cannot find the 4th (Lucy, a Wyandotte) no feathers or anything on our property. Managed to get the 3 back into...

Do hens stop laying during Winter?

i just got these hens full grown this Summer, they were rescues (in good health) and they layed great up until about 1 1/2 to 2 months ago. One i assume is a RIR (or Red sex link) and she is still laying almost daily. The Wyandotte and one EE is in molt so of course i don't expect from them...

Should i put a ladder up for my roost?

Roosting pole is about 4.5 to 5 ft off the ground, i think when they come off it they usually fly into the run and the run is concrete, right now one of my hens is slightly favoring a leg, maybe when i go out to feed in the a.m. i should gently take her off the roost... Anyone have a ladder...

Is this what Moulting looks like? (pics)

Just wondering as i've only had these hens for about 3 months, they're still laying but started slowing down a month ago and saw feathers poking out here/there but in the past couple days now seeing LOTS of feathers around, but just these downy types

How often should i clean the coup?

i have 4 hens that i got from the neighbors who abandoned them and i cleaned out a 8 x 10 wood dog house with an attached run and filled the coop with pine shavings and put them in there almost 2 months ago. About 3 weeks ago i let them out to free range during the day, needless to say it...

    New to chickens: Moulting?

I don't know how old my hens are but about 3-4 weeks ago i noticed they were losing just a FEW feathers here and there, haven't really taken a good look at them to see if there's bald spots but it looks like they were very lightly blowing feathers, do they do that without moulting? They have...

How many hours do you free range your chickens?

I started letting mine out of the coop/run about 3 weeks ago, and i let them out i think after they're done laying for the day which seems around 1:30 ish and they stay out until they go back in voluntarily to roost which is anywhere from 7 to 8 pm. so that's a long time. Oddly enough when i...

Egg production dropping on organic layer feed?

Since i switched over to an organic layer feed (have to wet it to bind with the fines) i have noticed a drop in egg production, no other factors have changed with the hens and now that i've been letting them out to free range for about a week now, you would think it would help them to be even...

How should i store my layer feed?

Talking specifically (although it would probably apply to any feed?) in the bag it was bought in as i don't have a huge container and it is crumbles (Scratch and Peck) and i just take out what i need daily and roll the bag back up, should i be doing it differently? It's stored in a garage.

Could you guys help me? :(

So i've had my hens (got them grown from a neighbor) for about 3 months, they've been in a coop and a small covered run for about 2 months now, we're TRYING to build a big pen out in front so they can free range (they used to free range and roost in trees, neighbors abandoned them) but it seems...

WHEN should i let my hens free-range? (letting out of coop)

I got 4 full grown (young) hens a couple months ago (they were free range and from the neighbors, slept in trees, would come over to my yard because i gave them food and water, neighbors were druggies and didn't care for them) and finally got a large dog house and small run prepared for them...

Switched to organic Layer Feed which they LOVE, but....

As i feared (it's not pelleted) they left a lot of the fine powder in the bottom, they attacked it with gusto though, clearly they love it. It's Scratch and Peck Naturally Free Layer Feed, it's local and apparently it sells very well. They say to mix w/yogurt if powder is left at the bottom...
