    Question about meat emus

I have seen so much info that if an emu chick develops splayed legs, there's no way to recover. I'm wondering if that means that there's no way to raise them to slaughter weight? I. E., they don't survive/thrive long enough with the deformation?

    Emus have arrived!

Thanks to ES Emus, the WiltonHilton now has a trio of adorable emus! They handled the 5 hour drive home very well, and are currently enslaving our daughter. She is completely smitten, and I suspect I might get a *little* tired of "OMG, they're so CUUUUUUTE!" squeals of infatuation. I assured...

Chicken math works in mysterious ways...

We just recently moved our 15 chicks (5-7 weeks old) out to their palace... And last night, beloved husband was poking around on the net and purchased a dozen Narragansett eggs and an egg brooder. So, I'm going have to do a lot of new research here, LOLOLOLOL I wonder what's next... Hm...

    I'm just so happy!

Our coop is done (done enough for secure chick-chicks, anyway), and our 4-6 week old chicks, who have been in their coop for only about 2 weeks had a big day today: they figured out their nipple waterers in about 15 minutes, and 10ish out of the 15 have discovered roosting tonight! They...

Is "tree of heaven" OK for chickens to eat?

We have lots around our property, including one that shades the coop. I did see somewhere that the wood is fine for chickens (coops, roots, etc), but my Beloved Husband has also been tossing the leaves to the girls, and they gobble them up. I haven't seen any adverse effects, but since my middle...

The Nugget Nest is 95% done!

All we need to do is shingle the roof, make the door for the end of the run, and add the white trim on the corners of the coop. My 15 chick-chicks have been living in the coop for a week, and allowed into the run for the past 4 days. Now, they are completely protected and they're loving every...

    Chick-chicks are here!

Yay! After almost a year of planning, I picked up 14 birds last week: 6 Easter Eggers, 4 Dominiques, 2 Welsummers, and 2 New Hampshire Reds (the Welsummers and Reds were impulse buys when I picked up my preordered chicks at the store). They are full of personality! The Welsummers names are...

The Nugget Nest is taking shape!

Our 14 chicks came last week, and we're enjoying socializing them... And my Beloved Husband is constructing them a PALACE! The coop has a 4'x8' footprint, and an additional 4'x8' covered in the front. We'll have 8'x16' *more* which will be completely enclosed. Overengineered, much? Well, yeah...

Has anyone purchased Organic feed thru McMurray?

I can get good chicken feed through the family I have a raw milk herd share with, but I was considering ordering the chick starter and grower (do I need both?) through McMurray. Does anyone have any experience with them? Also, about how much would I need? I'm going to have 4 Dominiques and 6...

    Pecked by the chicken bug

Hey, y'all! I'm Kat, and I live in south-central Virginia. Fifty years old, married to an awesome he-can-do-EVERYTHING! guy , with one wonderful daughter (18). We have neighbors who had chickens in the past, and somehow I've suddenly gotten bitten by the bug. Right now, we're planning out the...
