I was going to post this in the Turkey section.... but that seemed to be full of people with pet turkeys, and mine are not pets.....
Anyway, I bought three turkeys today, 2 are mine, 1 is my uncles. We named them Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving 2, and Christmas.
I've never owned turkeys though...
I have too many Roosters, and need to get rid of most. This SLW is only shy of 2 months old, is very friendly, and is looking for a good home or dinner table.
I met my first BYCer yesterday! She was awesome, and gave us two chicks from an order she'd just gotten. I've been trying to find frizzles, and she was nice enough to help me out! Anyway, we got one that is a white frizzle cochin, and the other is a frizzled black sumatra... I've never seen one...
Same old story, I bought these as pullets... and they're actin kinda rooish...... so here goes.. I have three chickens that are always fighting each other... neck feathers flaring, jumping in the air at each other... the whole shebang. One of them is definitely a roo, this is my handsome...
I gave my chickens the last of their feed this morning, and now they are out. I can't get to the store to get more till tomorrow... I have 16 chickens.....can I cook them oatmeal or eggs?? what is the best thing to feed them in a pinch?
I have 3 RIR's and I've been pretty sure for a while that one of them was a roo.... it has a bigger/redder comb and wattles, and a different tail with lots of black feathers that have been starting to show that green tint in the sun. All signs point to roo.... except that I just recently got a...
I remember finding this HUGE list somewhere about all the things that were poisonous to chickens, and I remember seeing creeping charlie, or ground ivy, on there...... Does anyone know how bad this really is for them, or if they will even eat it???
I have a very large backyard all completely...
It's day 23... on day 20, I had two eggs hatch, and my remaining 7 eggs did nothing for 3 days, so today I decided to pitch them. I cracked all 7 open, and the first one had never developed, or was infertile... it was too dark an egg for me to see this earlier while candling.... The remaining 6...
Yesterday at about 3 am.... I ended up assisting an egg with it's hatching.... It's membrane had dried and it was stuck in the shell. I was sure it would die without my help, which is why I intervened.
Anyway, the chick seems to be doing well, it's in a brooder with the only other one that...
I have a 3 week old brown leghorn, who always had a huge comb, and I had assumed it was a rooster... and he crowed his first crow this morning!!! I went out to let them out of their coop for the day, and he crowed, 7 times!!! it was the cutest little 3 week old crow ever. Just fyi.
This is my first time hatching eggs, and first time candling.... I don't know anything more than what I've read on here. I have 14 Eggs in a still air bator. My temp has been spiking everynight while I'm asleep to like 105, and I haven't figured out a way to prevent it. I figured I'd screwed it...
My fiance won't let me go buy feed anymore... he says he'll do it from now on because everytime I go to the feed store, I come home with more chickens....
Anyone else have this problem???
I would like to preface this by saying that I love BYC, and it's staff, and everyone here has always been extremely nice and helpful, and it's my favorite way to pass time online. I'm simply posting this as a "random rambling" to get it off my chest. Please don't ban me from BYC!!!!
That said...
seriously though, I want a frizzle... I'd prefer cochin. any color.
I can get one from a hatchery 20 minutes away, but they won't let me pick up... they say the only do shipping. I'm not paying $40 for one chick.
Someone has one cheaper.... fess up.
Please refer to the BST guide when...
I have a brown leghorn... 2 weeks old, bought as a pullet.... but it has a pretty darn big comb compared to any of the other chicks I have raised...but because leghorns have a different kind of comb than any of my other chickens, I don't know if it is a roo, or if that's just what the combs on...
I went to The Feed Store today, to buy feed, and they had Araucana pullets for sale... I bought two, because I've been trying to find these... I really want some colorful eggs!
Anyway, I'll be happy to have them either way, but I was wondering if there is a way to tell if they really are...
I bought two chicks from a feed store almost 3 weeks ago as day old chicks. They were the only two black ones in a huge crate of yellow ones... my heart went out to them. Anyway, I bought them without knowing the gender or breed, because the man selling them didn't know either.
The good news...
I saw a post here a few weeks ago of a guy who made a waterer out of pvc pipe, I'm pretty sure it was green and he had it rigged down to the bottom of the run with some triangle contraption... Anyway, I didn't bookmark it, and I want to make one.... Does anyone have a link to this waterer or one...
