HI all...been looking around the forums and can't find an answer so I'll start a new thread.
Thinking about Guineas, especially with their propensity for eating bugs, especially TICKS...I got nailed by a tick 2 years ago and got Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever as a result...
So I really don't like...
Thinking about getting some Guinea's to help control the insect problem at my place. My question is if I let them 'free range' during the day time will they 'roost' on top of autos or farm implements located in an open barn. I keep three of my vehicles in a 36x24 open barn.
Back on Oct 28th I posted that something had gotten into the outdoor portion of my coop and slaughtered 7 of my 8 Barred Plymouth Rocks. One survived although injured. I left her alone and she recovered but never laid another egg.
On Oct 10th, I got another 9 new day olds from the Nursery...
My hens got killed yesterday apparently by a raccoon. I'm wondering if it is too late in the season to start another flock?
I'd like to get some more Barred Plymouth Rocks like I used to have...
Any suggestions?
I came home today and went out about 4 pm to feed my chickens. I have/had 8 Barred Plymouth Rocks, not a small chicken.
One was in the nest box and was slightly injured. Another was lying on the floor of the coop. I went around outside the coop and looked in the enclosed outdoor run. The other...
Recently one of my hens has started laying larger than normal eggs, but, the end of the egg shell is very thin..not the whole egg, just one end. Many times it has a 'swirly' look to the shell, and when I tap it with a finger nail it collapses.
I feed layer feed, they get plenty of light...
I got home tonight and my wife said one of the chickens was dead.
I went out to the coop and collected the chicken from where it laid under the roost.
I checked her and found her vent was about the size of a quarter, there were NO feathers around it all the way to her legs and there were...
The other day I got one egg that was 2/3rds larger than normal and extremely elongated. I figured it was a double yolker and put it in the egg basket.
This morning I got it out, washed it and broke it into a cup.
The yolk was not formed and it was more yellow than usual and there was blood in...
While building my coop, I came across an article here at BYC for a pipe feeder constructed from PVC pipe.
Well, I built it with two 2.5' pieces of 4" pipe and a 90 degree elbow with two caps.
I drilled 4 2.5" holes in one piece and slipped it all together. Worked good, except I had to 'bang'...
I did a search on 'cat litter' and found pages of entries talking about using litter boxes and cats and their problems.
What I was wondering about last night was, has anyone used actual CAT LITTER as partial or full bedding for chicks in brooders to keep the odor down?
If it keeps cat poo...
Been checking the boards her and there and a lot of you seem to be using the 36 quart plastic bins for brooders.
I went to the local Big Lots this evening looking and they just seemed way to small for 10 to 12 chicks. At least when you get a feeder and waterer in with them.
So I bought a 106...
I use this recipe quite a lot, sometimes with variations. It's nice and simple and quick.
4 chicken tenderloins
1 tbsp raisins
2 tbsp olive oil
salt and pepper to taste
1 cup wine (use your favorite)
1 tbsp pecans/peanuts/cashews
Cook tenderloins in skillet with 2 tbsp of olive oil until they...
