    Baby Chick Just Disappeared

Yesterday I moved my baby chicks out of the brooder into my little chicken tractor. This morning one was missing and I looked everywhere. No sign of fow play! These chicks are 3 weeks old, large Faverolles. It was the runt I called Pee Wee. There is a 1 1/2" slit on the tractor and wonder if it...

Using 2X4 as Roost. Do they need to be rounded?

I am going to use a 2x4 as roost with them standing on the wide or 4" side. I read to round it but no explanation was given except they can it grip better. I figured if it is flat why would they need to grip it? Anyway I have no ideal how to round it so any simple suggestion without several...

    Litter for Open Front Coop

I am converting an open front room in the barn to a coop. Its main purpose is for nesting and to keep the goats from eating their feed. The goats have torn out the chain link from one side of the gate which I will repair and add barbed wire but leave a small opening for the chickens to come and...

    Are Roosters Slower to Mature?

My Faverolles chicks will be 2 weeks old tomorrow. It appears the hens are noticeably larger than what I believe to be roosters. Is this normal of this breed or chickens in general? Thanks!

Day 22, How Long Should I Wait to Toss Eggs?

About 8:00 last night my 6th egg hatched. I now have 4 eggs left and one has a pip hole in it and I can see it move. How many days do I wait to see if more will hatch? The eggs don't smell and these are mail order eggs. Thanks, Jeff

    New Chicks Just Laying Around

I had 2 chicks about noon today. Each flopped around the incubator and peeped a lot at first. After going into the brooder they just lay there and have not eaten or drinking anything. I know they can go 24 hours without food or water but will they figure it out on thier own. And do they tend to...

    First Pip

Well its day 21 for my large Faverolle eggs and at 7:45 AM CST, 5 of 10 eggs have the beginning of a pip. Now I am at 6. The picture is a bit blurry as it is taken through the curved plexiglas lid of the incubator. Can't wait to see the little boogers! Jeff

    Multiple Coops in One Pasture

Can I put 2 coops in my free range pasture? Would the chickens go to back to the coop they were locked in for the first 2 weeks or would all chickens end up in one coop or would it just be a free for all? I could put a fence down the middle of the pasture and separate the flocks and coops but I...

    Added Wheels to My Chick-N-Barn

I added a foundation and wheels to my Chick-N-Barn. Here is the foundation upside down before the wheels. Notice the deck bracing. That is pressure treated wood. Here is the finished version with pull rope. Currently I have 6 pullets in it but will move them to a larger coop and let them...

Waterer & Feeder that takes up Little Floor Space in Coop

My 3 gallon waterer and 16lb feeder is taking up most of the floor space in my little chicken coop. My nesting boxes when needed will sit on the ground as well leaving almost no floor space. I imagine having a water and a feeder trough on the inside of the coop mounted to the wall and larger...

    What humidity?

I find suggested temps for incubator to be consistent but suggested humidity is all over the place. First 18 days 40-65% depending on what source you read. Last 3 days 60-75% depending on what source you read. My Rcom Suro 20 suggests 40-45% first 18 and over 65% the last 3 days. Why the...

    New Bator

Well I am new to this forum but it has been great resource and thanks to everyone for all the insight! Like every hobby the more I learn the more it costs me. Today I received my R-Com King Suro 20 from Kemp's Koops and set it up and tested it. Within a couple of hours the temp stayed within...
