I have 2 broodies with a total of 24 eggs under them that are due to hatch next Sunday. I am going to leave them with their 'mama's separate from the rest of the flock. I am not sure what to feed them all. Should I feed chick feed and the hens can have that as well?
One of my broody chickens hatched 11 guinea keets 2 days ago. This morning I walked in the coop to find a snake in the enclosure with them & 4 keets missing. Would it help at all to keep a light on 24/7 in there? Would this deter another snake at all? That particular snake will not be eating...
I don't think that this is a 'breed' particularly, however, I am curious about others experiences with Production Red pullets. I bought 10 of them this past Spring. They started out to be the friendliest chickens that I have ever had. They followed me like a dog, did not seem to be afraid of...
I don't have a picture of her to show, but I have a guinea baby (4 mo. old) that is white but she has definite pearling. The other white guinea that I have (could be papa - don't know for sure as a broody chicken hatched the baby guinea) does not have any pearling at all - just solid white. So...
In light of guinea hens notoriously getting eaten because they lay their nests out under brush, posts, whatever and you can't find them - has anyone tried using night vision or infrared to find them??? I am thinking that this is something that I should have invested in 5 guinea hens ago!!
My broody has been sitting on guinea eggs for 27 days. There's no sign that I can see of anyone hatching. She was a 'store-bought' chicken. Does she maybe have no idea what she's supposed to do and therefore no one is going to hatch? How long do I wait before I remove the eggs? I'm sad that no...
Just wondering what the BYC'ers are thinking and doing in regards to all of the 2012 'hype'. We are a resourceful bunch - what do you all have on your mind? Is it doom and gloom?
We have 6- 9 month old guineas that were raised under a chicken. About a week ago one went missing and we figured that she was on eggs somewhere.....we found her 2 days later when she came out to eat and we followed her back - she is sitting on at LEAST 25 eggs. Then, a couple of days later...
We have 18 hens (all over a year old or so) and 6 guineas (who are almost a year old). I put our 10 4-week old chicks outside in a wire cage for a bit yesterday so they could peck around at the grass and see all of the other girls/boys through the wire. Well, the chickens were all fairly...
We kept our chickens and guineas in the coop one day this week due to the thick fog. When I checked on them in the afternoon, one of the chickens was dead. Everyone else was fine. I didn't have any idea that she was ill. I don't know for sure if she was one of the older hens that I got from a...
We really have not paid any attention to the eggs available at the grocery store since we got our hens. Today we were shopping and I decided to look at a dozen AA white eggs. They looked like they were spray painted with white paint. We also noticed some imperfections - such as raised areas on...
We have 6 guineas that are 4 months old. They make sounds anywhere from faint peeping noises, to gentle squawks to sounds that make you think that something is terrorizing them. I have read that the females make a 2-syllable noise and the males a 1-syllable noise. Which noise that they make...
I thought it would be interesting to see who all is out there from Kansas since the Okies have their own thread. Are there any other Jayhawks out there?

We found 3 hens this evening walking down the country road next to our farm. They are small, feather-footed chickens that I walked up to and picked up - so obviously someone dumped them as we are miles from anyone that has any livestock. They appear to be in good health but we don't want to...
I have a newbie question. We have a chicken that we found yesterday hiding out in an area off of the barn and sitting on 15 of her eggs that are not fertile as we don't have a rooster. She was broody so we got 12 fertilized guinea eggs - we would like some guineas around and what a perfect...
