I built this myself 4 years ago and somehow never got the information up on this site. So far the coop works great and the hens love it
.
I'll post finished pictures in subsequent posts.

I just got an email from EggCartons.com that from the 25th to the 30th you get 20% off everything and free shipping. Just put in the promo code CM2011.
I used this opportunity to get some nest box pads because I wanted to try them but they have many items for the care of chickens.
I hope this...
I got my order of 26 chicks from Meyer Hatchery on Wednesday, picked them up at the post office at 8 AM. All seemed fine when put in the brooder but by 2 PM one had died. The rest seem healthy and active are drinking (water with vitamin/electrolyte mix in it) and eating (Purina medicated...
Last night when I went out to put my adult girls to bed, I was surprised to find this stuck in the wire. Apparently in trying to crawl through the yard, he kinked too big and got stuck. He's a completely harmless bull snake. Here in NM you welcome them cause they eat mice and rodents. They...
Lowe's has posted the plans for a 3 hen coop and I thought I'd share. I would change the roost bar to a flat 2x4 and put a droppings board under it but the directions are excellent

I went to Home Depot today and bought all the wood I need for my new 8 x 16 coop. It was a lot of $$ but I am getting 26 babies the last week in June so they need a home. I have a smaller coop for my 6 adult girls but more chicks = new coop. I have the design and the framing plans all drawn...
I found this today and although expensive, it might not be a bad idea if you needed a coop in a hurry. It's 10x8 but you can get extensions to make it 10x12 or 10x16.

Mother Earth News online now has downloadable plans for many different size and style of barns and sheds that could easily be used for chicken houses. Here is the link to the site...
Could someone please tell me what they use DE for? I know I need food grade, but is it fed to them, put in their bedding, put in a dust bath?
Is it an insecticide or a wormer?
I hope this isn't too broad a subject but because I have to order it, I need to know what I am using...
Someone on my horse driving forum posted the link for this site and their source of food grade DE. I thought I would share:

I may order some now since they ship free and I cannot buy it locally....I've looked.
I have been using shredded paper for my nest box bedding and the girls don't mind at all. I take all my bills and inserts and put them in a paper shredder that cuts both ways so the pieces are about 2 inches x 1/4" and when I have a bag full, I change the bedding in the nest boxes.
Just...
I was looking on the Purina website at their chick starter and found that they have a free plan for a basic 4x4 coop. I'll post the links here:

I sure hope pecans are ok for them to eat, they love it when I crack the nuts and feed them. Tonite my grandson was even helping me step on the nuts and break them so the girls could have some.
I don't know if this is the right place to post this but today Dr. Oz had chickens on the show and was telling people how eggs are good for you.
He repeated over and over that eating eggs does not raise your cholesterol.
He said to eat one egg/day for good health.
Here's the video of the...
After a lot of research on the Web and on this forum, I decided to order from Meyer Hatchery. This is the first time I have ordered chicks, I usually get them from the feed store but I wanted some different breeds. I ordered a big variety 1 Buff Brahma, 1 Light Brahma, 2 Columbian Wyandotte...
This gadget, although expensive, takes care of shutting the pop door at the right time automatically and can also add hours to daylight in the winter.

I'm building a new coop...
I'm planning on getting around 15 chickens in the spring but first I want to build them a coop. What size should it be and how many feet of roost do I need? I will have sa large attached yard and they will eventually free range during the day. Any suggestions would be helpful.
