    Help with genders please

My birds are 9 or 10 weeks old except the speckled Sussex who is 7 or 8 weeks. Can you help me with genders please? I think the 3 older ones are girls but I'm not sure about the Sussex because of the bigger comb. Help please! Thanks Speckled Sussex RIR, BR , and EE BR

An egg! An egg! They laid an egg!!!

I'm so excited! It's tiny but awesome! I was surprised because they're only 4.5 months old, but there it was when I went in to change their water! I think it was Stampy, our buff orp. Her comb got really red recently. Bask in its eggy glory!

    Finches taking chicken feathers

Has anyone else seen this? Finches are taking my chickens feathers off the ground. It's kind of funny because the girls get all riled up and defensive, but I can't figure out why the finches are taking them or what they're using them for. Any ideas? Thanks!

    Bump on nostril

My 6 week old barred rock developed a bump on her right nostril today. It doesn't seem to bother her and there isn't any mucous or drainage. She's acting normally otherwise and she seems happy. Any ideas what it is? What should I do?

    Please tell me I'm wrong!

My girls are 4 weeks old, and I have a suspicion that 3 of the 4 are cockerels. Please tell me I'm wrong! This is a barred rock. S/he likes to be up high and she's kind of my buddy and likes to hang out on my arm. I think she's getting a pink waddle, though. And a buff orpington...

Movable run with foxes - wishful thinking?

I was really hoping to be able to make a movable run for my chicks, but we have foxes that moved into the neighborhood. Everything I've found on building fox proof runs involved burying the mesh. Is it possible to keep them safe from foxes in a movable run? I'm looking at a used chain link dog...

    Poo and water questions

One of my chicks keeps getting poo stuck on the feathers around her vent, but it doesn't seem to be actually blocking her vent. Do I need to worry if it's not actually preventing her from pooping? Should I just clip her feathers (I'm a little scared to)? How much water should they be drinking...

    They're here! They're here! They're here!!!

I picked up my darlings after work today and I was as anxious/excited on the car ride home as I was when I first brought my kiddos home from the hospital! lol I think they've got a pretty good setup: The Buff Orpingtion is named Stampy Longbeak (chosen by 8 y/o DS). She's a loose cannon...

Thoughts on coop and run plan

Hello everyone! I wanted to pick your brains on our plans for our chicken space in our back yard. My husband and I are planning on building a chicken tractor that is 4x7 with a gambrel roof and letting them roam freely for most of the time in a fenced area of our back yard. Overall they would...

    pine branches for baby chicks

Hi, I've started composting my Christmas tree that's been sitting in my backyard since New Year's Day. I thought about saving some of the little branches for the babies to practice roosting on when they're a couple of weeks old. Is this a bad idea? Would it be ok to leave some of the pine...
