I have three young ducks who have been raised on the regular mixed flock Grower feed. They are about three months old now. I also have two one year old ducks that are laying an egg a day, that I got from a farm recently.
I would like to switch my ducks to organic feed but the only kind of feed...
I have a pretty large garden but this year I kind of ran out of space. I have a beautiful fenced square area where we raised 26 Cornish in a truck cap last year. The soil is loose and full of earth worms. We processed the chickens last October, so it's been empty since then.
My problem is...
Unable to lock down a processor who didn't want $8 a bird, after my own processor backed out, I decided to tackle this project on our own. I really had no choice as they weren't getting any younger! I had 26 Cornish X and now 12 are done, cleaned and in the freezer!
I just want to...
I'd love to find a mill to help cut my feed costs -- does anyone know of any in the Eastern PA Northern NJ area? I wrote to Moyer's as I was wondering if they might know but that would be a bit of a drive-
any help appreciated! :)
Hi - I am having a bug problem and I'm wondering if it's my shavings! They are these teeny little bugs that are in the coop - I guess they can be mites, -they are REALLY tiny and light colored. They also seem to be residing in the feed bags - if we reach our arm in, they will be on our arms...
I'm finding threads of people moving their Cornish outdoors at 3-5 weeks, but since we're all from different climates and seasons matter too, I was wondering for now, September in Northern NJ - temps at night in the 50's-60's and daytime temps 70's to 80's.
They will be 4 weeks old this...
I did 9 Freedom Rangers 3 years ago and the processor charged me $3 a bird.
I am now doing 30 Cornish - I figured it would be about the same or a little bit less -- for a larger batch.
Now I'm seeing many of you are paying only $1.50-$2 per bird!
Today I'm taking her two GIANT Cornish giants...
Raising a batch of 30 cornish for the first time. At a week old, they are doing well on the fermented feed - I noticed since I switched them, they are not desperatel glugging around the waterer all day! :)
My question is this - I assume they will stay on the grower feed until slaughter time...
I fermented some feed overnight as per instructions on the forum - I used Purina flock raiser.
My 2 day old Cornish won't touch it! I was worried as they were not eating at ALL. I finally sprinkled a few dry crumbles on top and they all descended the dry food and gobbled it up!
Why won't they...
Hi all - after four years of doing just egg layers (with a very small experiment of 9 Freedom Rangers a couple of years ago) we are endeavoring to do a "real" meat bird project. I have 30 peeps that arrived from Moyer's today.....
I went to Tractor Supply and the Purina flock grower that I got...
We just hatched our first chick ever late last night , on Father's Day! :) However, the chick is still in the incubator and is stepping all over the other eggs and even picking at a few of them.
There is another egg that looks like it may hatch - one notch is out and has been out since...
My 15 year old volunteers at a wildlife rehabilitation center and they got in this batch of chicks which had been seized by animal control. They were being raised by an ambitious college student in an apartment who was feeding them parakeet food and cornmeal.
The wildlife center is over run...
I have a broody Buff who hasn't left the nest in a couple of weeks. She's been sitting on golf balls and eggs.... Got six babies from Tractor supply and snuck them under her in the evening. We're just amazed at this whole process. Immediately she puffed way up and they burrowed under her...
This is a fun but strange recipe for using up extra eggs. We are on a grain free diet, so it works well for us.
9 egg whites
pinch salt
6 egg yolks
2/3 cup farmer's cheese, cream cheese or cottage cheese (full fat okay)
2TBS water (I eliminated this since I used cottage cheese)
heat oven 300...
In the two years we' ve had chickens and all the time we've bought free range eggs, I've never seen one....until this morning. It was about 2" long and definitely not those weird strands that are inside an egg.
Of course, it stands to reason that all chickens have parasites even once...
I'm having a terribly weird problem with my flock. I have 33 chickens; all different breeds and ages. I have tried pellets, crumbles and mash in a variety of different brands. My chickens scratch it all over the place; I would conservatively say that more than 50 percent of their feed ends...
I have 13 hens - five different mixes of breeds. They have been excellent layers - averaging between 9 and 12 eggs a day. However, now we're only getting four a day out of them! =:O They're only 11 months old....so what gives?
About a month ago I added some new hens to our flock, but their...
One of my hens is having respiratory issues - I was given oxytetracycline in the 4+ ounce packet of powder by the feed store, who also has hens and uses this. I have no clue how to dose - all it says on the outside is that it makes 512 gallons at the 200mg concentration, 256 gallons at the...
We "adopted" a crossbeak from a neighboring farm when we bought several auracana hens from her. SHe is much smaller than the others and i'm not sure what we can do for her. Her beak is pretty bad. I have no idea how old she is, but the other auracanas were hatched in Feb so she may have too...
I have 14 chickens, five different breeds (barred rock, white rocks, gold laced wyandottes, australorps and NH reds.) I've suddenly noticed that all of their eggs seem to be getting lighter and lighter in color. They are now a cream color instead of brown..... My hens are all 11 months old...
