Not Laying 10 month old hens

We got 3 eggs from a friend last March 2017 and our broody hen hatched them. Went great - but it is now Jan 2018 an only one has started laying in the last 4wks. What's up with the other 2?? They aren't roos. Sorry I have no idea of breed - all dark black feathers, beautiful birds.

HELP!!! Momma hen was off her eggs!

I have 4 hens and one went broody. So we put 5 fertilized eggs under her to hatch. She has been doing great - 2 1/5 weeks in! I came home today and she was in the opposite nest box sitting on an unfertilized egg - and the other eggs were cool! Looks like when she got up to eat one of the...

    Broody Hen

I have a broody hen which we put fertilized eggs under her (we have no rooster). She is doing great. My question is do I need to physically move her off the nest so she eats and drinks?? She has free access to both in the run. I never see her move !!!

    Hen lost back Feathers

I have one hen who our roo was a little ruff with last summer. She lost all her feathers on her rump. After getting rid of the roo I put a saddle on her but every time I try to take it off she pecks at herself. She is absolutely bare on her rump. Will I ever be able to remove the saddle...

    Pullets sleeping in Nest Boxes.

I have (2) 1yr old hens and added 3 pullets when they were 1mth old. (Now 22wks) They are certainly on the bottom of the pecking order - very skidish around the hens. One of the chicks is always sleeping in the nest box. We have tried placing them on the roost after dark, closed off the...

    Getting new pullets to roost.

Hi folks - I added 3 chicks (4 weeks old) to my 2 hens. At first I let them stay in the nesting box because the hens picked on them mercilessly. Now they are 8 weeks old and still in the nest boxes at night. Getting along a little better now - but still get pecked - they are still skidish...

    Rooster and hen behavior

I finally got rid of my only rooster (1 roo and 3 hens). He was just a mean bird - I couldn't walk outside without him coming at me - even after holding him!!! My question is now that the roo is gone - my hens are all over the place! They don't stay together anymore. He kept everybody in...

    PVC Feeder misteriously emptying

I use 2 PVC feeders in my run. Straight down 3ft with a Y connector on the bottom so it gravity feeds as they eat out of the bottom opening. I have found (3-4x) an entire tube emptied around the bottom of the feeder all over the ground. I cannot figure out how they are doing this. They...

    Roosts

Should I be worried that only 2 of my 4 chickens will roost?? The other 2 (hen and roo) stay sitting on the floor of the coop. (coop is 6'L x 3'W x 3'D) I have two roosting bars 1x4" with, I thought good spacing between them. When I place them on the roosts they all fit with lots of room.

Suburban BYC How to keep them in the yard??

For those of you who live in the suburbs and have chickens, if you let them out to free range for part of the day how do you keep them from wandering away?? I only let mine (5) out when I can watch them in the yard, but they have started to wander around to the front yard. I am afraid a...

    Chickens losing Feathers

My hens are 20 weeks old - healthy, eating well very docile - just perfect. I am concerned about them losing feathers. It looks like natural turnover not a molt because the have no bare spots. Is this a normal growth pattern? Just new feathers growing replacing fine downy ones?? It alot...

    Feeding sraps in the run?

I occasionally give my hens scraps but I am wondering about giving them in the run. I have a sand base, but wouldn't the scraps end up with poop on them and infecting the hens?? Should I have a place outside the run for scraps. No matter what I put them in they end up all over the ground!

Coop door - to close or not to close??

If your coop and run are secure (every whole plugged, hardware wire everywhere), is it safe to leave the coop door open at night?? We will be traveling for 5d and will not be able to open and close each day. (Electric doors are SO expensive!)

    Mites and Lice

Are these pests inevitable?? My hens are only 2mon old and are now out in the coop/run. Should I be doing something preventive? Or just be on the look out constantly. I use sand on the floor in the coop, grass clippings in the run (will soon be changing to sand also). If I have a dust bath...

    Run activities

What should I have in the run so my chickens don't get too bored. Or am I overthinking this?? We only let them out to free range when we can watch them so they spend alot of time in the run. It is 10ft x 6ft. We plan on using sand on the floor but are currently placing all the lawn...

    Food and water Inside coop

I just moved my 5 chicks to the coop. The coop is only 4x4ft with 2 nesting boxes. Do I have to supply food and water inside the coop (for night time) if it is available in the run - which they have access to all day??

Chicks learning to use horizontal nipples

My chicks are 2.5 weeks old and I have introduced a horizontal nipple waterer. When I jiggle the nipples to put a small drop of water in the cup they go crazy trying to drink it - but they don't seem to push the nipple to get water themselves. I can't see the water level go down significantly...

    Chick activity

My chicks finally arrives - no pasty butts, look healthy and active. They ate and have been drinking the last 3d - but they sure do sleep alot. Temp is 95. And quiet too. When I am around them they perk up and are very skitterish but otherwise very sedate. Is this normal?? I almost feel...
