How does genetics affect issues other than color? Say, egg size or laying ability?
Doe the female or male determine these factors, or is it unpredictable? Lets say, i have a Jersey Giant hen and a Cochin rooster...can egg size and laying frequency be determined? Egg color?

We are in the process of thinning out the herd and currently have 8 eight week old Key West chickens we are need to rehome.
We are 99% certain that 7 are female and 1 is male.

Besides silkies are there other chickens with black skin?
We just aquired a hen that is shaped like a game, has black skin a rather large comb for a game which is black/purple. Her plumage is all black with a small amount of gold under her "chin" and is a fairly large bird?
Here is a pic of our little miracle.
Broody mom was sitting on several eggs when we noticed something was getting in the coop and taking the eggs. We moved her and the eggs into a different coop and she decided she was not going to sit any longer. : ( This happened a week ago when we had the...
I have a question for yall........
I have raised Bourbons in the past and I loved them. Very friendly, large, and yes, tasty!
We are now planning on getting back into turkeys and wanted to get some feedback on your preferences.
How does the standard Bronze compare to the Bourbons? Size...
I understand , mostly, the chicken color thing, the calculator everyone here refers to is great.
However, in this instant Im more concerned with traits...is there a way to get an idea of what traits of a given breed would be dominate in a cross breed? Or is it simply trial and error?
Im not sure is this is the proper place to post this but here it goes anyway!
What are the fastest growing heritage breeds?
I know that Delawares are fairly fast maturing but what else?
We plan on acquiring several Delawares chicks around Jan/Feb.
Our question is, where is the best place to get them?

Any ideas?

They are all mixed...

The reason I ask is because I have a hen hatching about eight eggs right now and one chick required "help".
Standard pip in the shell 24 hours ago the nothing. I could hear the chick but no progress! I started peeling the shell away and noticed that...
We have a group of 3 month old blue cochins that are absolutely beautiful. However, today we noticed that two of them have some red in their plumage. Not much...just a dime size spot of red/brown on a otherwise blue wing feather!
Not being anything close to an expert on genetics we are slightly...
Ive noticed alot of opposition to broody hens of late....Why?
I recall not too many years ago that a broody hen was considered a prize possession!
Once I got into alot of trouble because a lady who had a really good broody decided to sell her, my mom told me to run to her house and get it. I...
