Not me, one of my ducks.
Just for fun I left some eggs in the corner of the duck house and one of my younger ones (hatched last year) decided to sit on them. For the first few days she came off the nest a lot, any time I fed them she would join the flock and then go off with them when they'd...
Haven't been around for a while so a re-introduction might be in order.
I'm Sue, in British Columbia.
Right now I have 11 chickens and 7 runner ducks. All are free range from when I get up in the morning until nearly dark, year round.
I'm a 66 year old widow, happy on my little island.
John the Pervert won his class i.e. drake, any breed. Not too hard since he and his daughter (or granddaughter) were the only entrants, I think. But he also won Best in Show which includes the non-4H kids and the family exhibits.
His daughter came in second.
Yay John!
Does anyone have a list of desirable traits for runners?
Mine are upright and have a pretty good profile.
One thing I need to know is if a drake is marked down for not having his curly tail feather. My John seems to have lost his.
Also, I want to show one of my ducks who is coloured. No separate...
I'm running out of room for my birds! Here's the problem;
I want to clear some space for a couple of chickens to get them ready for the Fall Fair. I only have 2 safe lock-up places, apart from the duck house and the henhouse. Right now there are 2 nine-week old runners in one, and 2 three-week...
Old Granny, my retired ISA brown who has never gone broody in her life, has decided to sit with Buffy. Buffy is sitting on 4 duck eggs. Granny has been sitting with her since early this morning.
Edit: Forgot to mention that the eggs are due to hatch any day now.
One of my 2 hen-hatched ducklings (June 18) started to quack this morning.
I don't know who was more surprised, the duckie or me! She kept looking around to see where the funny noise came from.
I have 2 broodies right now - a Buff Orp and a mutt. Buffy is sitting on 4 duck eggs, Puff is sitting on nothing at all. I tried giving her one of Buffy's but she didn't want it. Guess she figured it belonged to Buffy or something.
I put a small glass container in front of her in case she was...
I recently had a family friend staying here for a few nights. Well-behaved, pleasant company to a point but;
He showed absolutely no interest in my ducks (or chickens, for that matter)!
I promise I'm not the type who goes on and on about my birds. Well, not to people who don't want to hear...
I had been taught that a white drake bred to a mixed colour duck would almost always produce a white duckling.
That doesn't seem to be the case for me. Both my drakes are white - one from a long line of show quality birds and the other who is either his son or his nephew. I guess the father of...
My broody hen, to whom I gave 3 fertile duck eggs, hatched out a duckling this afternoon. It was still wet when I checked on her, about 4:00 this afternoon.
I moved her and the baby and the 2 remaining eggs to a level spot in a brooder cage my kid built for me. The last time I tried that she...
The guy up the road told me he's getting some ducks next week. Khaki Campbells and/or Welsh Harlequins. I reminded him that he'd basically given me his duck cage because he wanted to build a new one and asked if he wanted it back. He said he wanted to build something more in keeping with his...
My chicks are 5 weeks old and have been outside with no heat for about a week. They're happy and healthy and always hungry, of course!
I have them on 20% starter/grower mash. The label suggests that layer chicks should eat this to 6 weeks of age.
I also give them greens in the form of thin...
Just want to share what I saw at our local poultry swap last weekend. A woman was selling a trio of RIRs, show quality.
The Roo was very handsome, but the hens - I have never seen such gorgeous birds! Deep brown, even colour all over. Just beautiful!
Sorry if this isn't the right place. It's...
When should I be seeing feathers on newly hatched chicks?
I got mine Wednesday night as day-olds.
This is Friday night and the little already have feathers!!
(My first time with chicks. Before this I've gotten POLs or had someone else do the brooding for me.)
(I just posted this question in the wrong folder, sorry.)
Do I have to use the red brooder lamp for day-old chicks?
My home-hatched ducks were fine with a 100 watt incandescent bulb.
Right now I'm madly setting up for peeps arriving next week. They will be inside my house, if that makes any...
I have a question about brooder lamps. Last year I used a plain 100 watt bulb over my 3 home hatched duckings and they were just fine.
Do I really need one of those red heat lamps or can I get away with a plain incandescent bulb?
Day-old chickens are arriving in a few days from the hatchery and...
