    Irma aftermath

We survived Irma, the eye passed right over us. We had no injuries to people or animals, the coop that Mike built withstood the 80-90 mph gusts, and the sheep hunkered in the bard all ok. We did have a bit of roof damage on the house, and lost some siding, but the barns held strong. The after...

    First day outside

So we built a little chick coop, it where we will keep the chicks between leaving the brooder and getting into the big coop. The bantams are three weeks, the Orpington chick is 2 1/2 weeks old, and the turkey chick is 12 days old. It was a nice warm day here in Florida and I needed to scrub the...

    Turkey hatching

So I have two hens that decided to brood together out in the turkey coop. It's not like they didn't have choices, but all the hens laid in the same slot. These two hens decided they would sit on them all and there were many. Periodically they pitch one out I am guessing those were not viable...

How I make my huddle huts for baby chicks

For after hatching but I thought I would share a video of how I make my huddle hut. One huddle hut is good for about 10-12 chicks, you can use more than one if you have more chicks in the brooder, it is meant for moderate temperatures not for colder outdoor use.

    Incubating chickens and turkeys

Today I set 27 chicken eggs, 18 of them were some English Orpingtons I had shipped to me, the other 9 are from my own coop, including some buff orpington, and EE. 4 days ago I set up my old incubator with my first 6 turkey eggs as a test batch. Fingers and feathers crossed.

    some good orpington stock

Somewhere on here I read about Bobbi Porto, I cannot seem to find the post now. I am ordering a dozen orpington fertile eggs from her. The ones I got from the hatchery were crap and I really love the orpington breed. I told her to send me a mix including Crele. I can hardly wait. Whoever posted...

    Tom Turkey disinterested I think?

This is my first go round with turkeys. I raised 13 and sold the extra Tom's (at Thanksgiving) and kept a Narragansett Tom, 2 Narragansett hens, and 3 Royal Palm hens. They are all 11 months old. I feed them Game Bird 30% and mix in about 25% scratch, they also get fresh grass, some fruit, and...

lost a black sex link hen yesterday

So sad, I lost one of my black sex link hens yesterday. She was about 9 months old. I put them in the coop the night before everyone seemed fine, in the morning I went out to open their run and feed and I found her squatting in a corner, I thought maybe she was egg bound, I picked her up and...

why does mom spill out all the food

This is my first time letting mama hen raise the chicks. All 5 eggs hatched and seem to be doing well. I noticed that mom uses her beak to take all the food out of the feeder and kick it around on the floor of the crate I have them in, is this normal? Observing them I see the chicks are all...

First attempt at letting a broody hen hatch chicks

We have a red hen (mixed breed) that kept going broody, after 3 times of breaking her out of the broodiness I decided to let her sit on some eggs. I wasn't sure how it would turn out. We live in Florida and even though it is winter it is fairly warm out. Yesterday evening at feeding time I saw a...

    My Cackle experience

Its been a while since I have posted. Some of you might remember that I ordered turkeys and some chickens from Cackle Hatchery. So out of 20 turkeys ordered 16 arrived alive. I lost 2 more along the way. The others grew strong and healthy. I sold all the toms except one at Thanksgiving. I now...

How I get my turkeys to come into coop at night

When I first got my turkeys I was told that they would not come into the coop at night the way my chickens come to their coop just before dark. I have developed a way to get them to do that but I just want to make sure this method is ok and I appreciate advice and comments. I feed the turkeys...
