Hey BYC, I have bbs orpingtons and buff as well. Im curious about crossing strains. Is there a gender that produces type most consistently? Im thinking its best to breed both hens and roosters that exhibit good type, but what if i had one exemplary hen or rooster. Would it be best to breed back...
I have two strains of RIR in seperate pens. One is a hatchery stock backcrossed 2 generations. The other is hatchery stock. This far they both are very productive as far as egg laying goes. What do I get out of crossing the two strains and then selecting for breeders? would i be better off...
Hey BYC,
I just wanted to share some success I had with the pasty butt issue. Well I have 12 Delaware chicks in the brooder and most of them had pasty butt. I decided not to clean em off or do anything about it this time since it never really helped previously for me. For 2 1/2 weeks they had...
Hey BYC,
I have a Buff Orpington rooster who is bald behind his waddles. Im thinking its from always being wet from when he drinks and saggy waddles just rubbing em off. Has anyone else experienced this? What are some remedies? I kinda wanna trim his waddles off like how they do gamebirds.
Has anyone seen the videos or heard of incubating chicks without their shells? I saw a video on FB from a Japanese class where the students incubated chicks in a lil cup without eggshells and they were able to see the development every step of the way. It was really cool. I was thinking that...
When you breed a Delaware male to a New Hampshire or Rhode Island Red female you get chicks with the Delaware color pattern.
My question is are these Delaware rooster x NH or RIR hens offspring still silver? Like the original Delaware?
I just ordered 40 BPRs with the intention of maintaining a purebred flock, as well as crossing them to produce BSLs from time to time.
After I placed the order I found that breeding BPRs requires breeding sports, a few different color varieties in the breed, to maintain good barring and so on...

Hey BYC,
I wanna produce my own Red Sex links! I'm targeting Columbian Rocks, Columbian Wyandottes, and Delawares for the hens side.
And for the roosters my choices are Buff Orpingtons, Rhode Island Reds, and Production Reds.
I would like to my Red sex link hens to be PROLIFIC brown egg...
Hey BYC,
has anyone ever placed their nest boxes in a separate area from the roosting perches, or wherever they are sleeping? I was just thinking it might be a good preventive way to keep the girls outta the nest boxes at night. If anyone has done this please let me know what your results...
Hey guys i gotta 3 part question for the board!
1) What do you get when you cross a BO roo x RIR hen?
2) What do you get when you cross a RIR roo x BO hen?
3) What do you get when you cross their offspring? (BOxRIR)x(RIRxBO) OR (RIRxBO)X(BOxRIR)?
Im just wondering if I would get a...
Hey everyone,
this one always bugs me, how much influence does feed really have on the birds development? Can it make a bird mature faster than its own genetic potential? Can it make a bird lay earlier than its genetics say its ready to lay?
Hafa adai!
I'm here on Guam and we only have a few brands of feed distributed here. One of the popular brands of feed is Land O Lakes Feed Hawaiian Grain. Has anyone ever heard of or used this brand? A lot of poultry owners use it here, the thing is i can't find anything on the internet about...
