    Molting or Not?

My oldest hens are from April 2016 so this will be their first year molting but so far only this one is changing. However she has drastically lost feathers in the last 2 days and even when I pick her up they fall out in chunks. Is this normal? Nobody else is loosing feathers yet.

    Speckled sussex

Is it normal for them to become more white feathered as they age? Mine did a light milt early in the fall and her head and neck is now completely white!

    Breeds

Any idea on breeds? They are around 6 months except for the older black and white hen whom I was told was a cuckoo marans but I'm not for sure because I was told the younger one was a barred rock and they look similar to me. Seems everyone has a different opinion of what they all are. Help...

    Handsome guy

I've gotta get rid of this fella. He crows constantly and we live in a subdivision. He hatched May 1 of this year. The eggs I got were supposed to be as attached.

    Don't lay there!

I have 5 girls that are from April 2016. Until this past April all of them layed daily in a bucket on the floor of the coop(rather than the best boxes hanging 2 feet above said bucket). Since one went broody and hatched my April 2017 flock only 2-3 have been laying and they are doing it on the...

    Rooster behavior

Hi! One of my broodies hatched 10 eggs and 2 ended up being roosters. They are about 3.5 months now and one of them (the gray) is crowing very loud all day long. Unfortunately we live in a subdivision so I'm afraid I will have to get rid of him. My question is, he seems to be the dominant. He's...

    Breed and Gender identification help

Hi! I'm fairly new to chickens. Got my first girls April of 2016. Eenie, Meanie, Miney, Moe, Catcha, and Tiger :) I got hatching eggs this April as I suspected my Barnevelder (Moe) was broody. She hatched 10 babies from a "rainbow" dozen and has raised them up good. They are now about 2 months...

    New mama

Hi! I could use some advice on raising the chicks my broody is hatching. I just had my own baby 3 days ago so life is a bit hectic!!! My plan is to move her and chicks out of the dog kennel into the coop, putting down fresh litter of course. My other hens will stay out in the run until I can...

    Help please!

3 days ago I noticed one of my 6 month old hens looking hunched and fluffed up. She was still venturing out with the flock and following me but not with her usual zest. The second day I inspected her and found her entire breast to be hard so I started treatment for impacted crop. This is the...

    Bugs!

Hi! I'm new to chicken keeping and working on keeping the flies, roaches, ants at bay. My girls are still too young to free range in the pasture so they are confined to a large run currently. We have rocky clay soil and no matter how much sand i add or how much i rake it gets compacted. This...

    Hello!

Hi all! I got 4 chicks a few weeks ago, ended up with (supposedly)Easter eggers, a cuckoo maran, and a barnevelder. Being new to chickens I took the ladies word for it since they were free! Now that they are around 6/7 weeks old, I'm beginning to wonder if I may not have a roo or two in there...
