hi all, just curious, is salmonella common in duck eggs? My neighbors have a lovely Newfoundland who loves to eat fresh duck eggs raw. My neighbors encourage this. One of their non-duck friends said that this will give the dog salmonella. I only give the dog very fresh, washed eggs.
H! Always appreciate your feedback!! My oldest duck I just noticed has a small egg yolk looking thing dragging on her behind with what looks like some kind of long clear cord attached. She didn't have this this morning. She's moving around fine, eating and swimming, and she just laid a ton of...
How is the best way to hard boil duck eggs? I can’t eat eggs but I want to hard boil and dye Easter eggs for gifts. My ducks are khakis and Welshies, so moderate size eggs. Thanks for your input!
Oddly, my ducks haven’t been eating really anything…last few days. Nor are they really drinking much. It’s cold and snowy here but they usually chow down, swim in the lukewarm water I give them. Their barn is always clean, well ventilated, they’ve being doing well all winter, and they all look...
Every year I freak out about the frigid cold and my beloved ducks in the cold.
yes, they have a always clean small barn, fresh food and water, and a very small poultry heater.
Next week, we’re expecting temperatures in the single digits, some maybe minus digits.
Please, those of you in the...
Hi all, sorry I haven’t been on for a while. Everything going on in this world has kept me busy.
Trying to find real, flaked oyster shells has been tearing my mind apart. My ducks are hardly laying eggs, due to misleading products that claim oyster shells, but are really just clam and coral...
Funny thing, my ducks have recently had the habit of going in their barn on their own and waiting for me to bring them food. It’s great that they are doing this, but I recall my early experience of really having to cajole the ducks out of the pond, or taking half hour or so to round them up...
I have a 6 year old Khaki female, Baby, who is an enormous diva, and real troublemaker. She is fond of luring other ducks to go to the road in front of my house. 2 of my girls have died as a result of this. Yesterday, her only companion that she would tolerate, my beloved duck, Sparky, got hit...
Okay, I’ve always had issues with one of my older drakes. Today he was just bat**** mean to my other drake. Which I don’t understand as they are both the same age and have lived together for 6 years. He was chasing the other drake (Sparky) away from the rest of the flock.
Sparky is a runner...
Since the weather has been slowly warming up, my ducks are really acting whacky. I’ve never experienced this with them. They are terrified of me, and are reluctant to come out of the barn in the morning. Ironically, they don’t want to go back in the barn in the late afternoon either.
we still...
Finally after this brutal winter in Ohio, we are expecting temperatures in the upper 30s and upper 40s!
we haven’t had any temps above freezing for months! I’m so excited for my ducks to get out of the barn a little more. Happy news!
(I really need to get a life, 😆 lol)
how is your weather?
So this morning it’s -3F. I know a lot of you have colder temps than that, but this is a first for me with ducks...it’s never been this cold. They’re not accumulated to the negative temperatures. This time of year we’re usually between 12F low to 25F high.
This morning I brought their lukewarm...
In Northern Ohio, we have 17 degrees F for a few days. I haven’t bothered filling up the kiddie pool in the last 4 days, as they seem uninterested in going out to ice and snow and cold, cold temps.
They probably need a bath, though. I can monitor their behavior. Lukewarm bath okay in these...
Oh my poor Sugar has had more issues with her left foot following an amputation of her left toe from infection in May of last year.
Now, she’s got a big honker on her heel (site of amputation).
We went to the vet, and agreed that this was NOT bumblefoot. She had a week or 2 with Metacam, no...
The girls have been a little slow lately with producing eggs. Have had a couple of soft shell ones as well. They have plenty of oyster shells all day, and tonight I’m sprinkling some calcium glutenate on their peas.
I thought maybe I could introduce some plain yogurt and that might help boost...
Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season, and let’s look forward to a much better year in 2021.
we had to postpone Xmas today due to extreme weather in the NE, but my duckies got extra treats today😉
Well in this crazy holiday shipping season, things went like this..
I went to order a certain brand of mealworms on Amazon, but they were pretty much out of mealworms, period.
I went directly to the brand website I like and ordered 25 lbs. Of mealworms as it was a special offer.
The vendo, in...
Okay, not really a predator to ducks, but I’ve dealt with a nuisance groundhog for years. It is always trying to get to the duck’s food, and eats my garden vegetables.
The last straw(s) for me was 2 days ago, when it burrowed a huge hole under the door of my duck barn. I didn’t see it till I...
One of my Welshies passed something really awful this morning, and I need to get this at TSC.
Can anyone share dosage info? And should it be given orally or by injection?
Thanks!!
My girls (khakis and welshies) are normally pretty good egg producers. The last couple weeks, I’ve seen too many weak-shelled broken eggs and twice a shellless egg. I used to get 7-9 eggs a day. Now I’m lucky if I get 4.
I put out about a half cup each of scratch and peck flaked oyster shells...
