    A couple of winter questions

I'm in Michigan, and this will be our first winter with the chickens. Our coop is insulated and we don't plan to add heat. The outdoor run has a roof, and we plan to add plastic on the sides, so I assume they will still go outside quite a bit. They are used to free-ranging most days, but I'm...

Question about Compost Pile and Poop

I have a plastic garden composter by my garden that is now full to the top with chicken poop. I have a second compost site behind the garage that the chickens have access to. So far I just throw fruit and veg scraps there where there was already a pile of old composting woodchips and leaves...

    how often to worm, etc

Our first chickens are about 5 months old and all seem very healthy. I have not wormed them and have never treated for mites or lice. I do put DE in their coop and dust bath. I checked them for bugs on their necks under the feathers and haven't seen any. Although I have seen a few tiny bugs...

    Adding to the Flock

Well, our only silkie ended up being a roo and got re-homed. So my kids still want a silike. My 11 hens are 5 months old now. There is a chicken show in my area in October, so if we go pick out a couple of silkie pullets, will we need to quarantine them? We only have one coop and run, so...

How to Keep them Off the Deck

We let the chickens free range during the day, but toward the end of the day when they work their way back toward the house, they like to hang out on our deck and poop on the deck table and chairs and all over the deck. We chase them off repeatedly, but they just come back. So if we're not...

    Ramp to Nesting Boxes?

We had our first egg today - it was a soft one under the roost. The nesting boxes are only a couple feet off the ground, with no ramp, and we've seen some of the chickens exploring them. Do you think we would more likely get them all using them if there was a ramp? Or will they just hop up...

    First Egg!!! a softie.

Well, our first hens are 4 1/2 months old and today I found the first egg! I don't know who laid it but I suspect it was one of the barred rocks. It was a collapsed softie on the poop board underneath their roost. They are still on Grower Feed that we get from a local farm. I have put in a...

    Can a Roo live alone?

We need to get rid of our roo because he's agressive and I have little kids. My retired stepdad said he will tak him and try keeping him as a pet. They have a privacy fence around their backyard where he will free range during the day, and he will put him in a crate in the basement at night...

    Silkie Roo?

Please tell me our beloved little cutie pie "Vanilla" is not a roo! This morning we heard our first "Cocka-doodle-doo. Our 12 chickens are about 3 months old. When I went out to the coop to investigate, not a peep. Hubby says no roosters.

    Will Free-Rangers use nesting boxes?

We have 12 chickens who are about 2 1/2 months old. They are our first chickens, and we've been letting them free range in the backyard during the day if we're around to keep an eye on them. When they get close to egg-laying age toward the end up summer, should we keep them in the run/coop...

    Is Fertrell DE always Food-Grade?

I bought some at Uncle Luke's in Troy, MI. It's in a brown bag, and it does not say food grade anywhere on the bag, but the feed store told me they are positive it is food grade and they are not sure why that's not printed on the bag. It does say Fertrell on the bag. Just want to make double...

    What age to free range?

Our chickens are 7 weeks old and living in their coop/run and doing great. At what age should we consider letting them free range during the day? Our back yard is fenced, but I'm not sure if that will completely contain them. We have been tapping a metal bucket every time we give treats to...

    Deep Litter Method Question

We have our 5-weekers out in the coop. They don't have access to the outdoor run (it's being built!) and they mostly live on the floor, so the coop is kind of like a big brooder. We have about 3 to 5 inches of pine shavings on the floor in about a 10 by 10 area with 12 chicks. It's looking...

Can I move 3-weekers out to the coop?

I think the brooder is getting too small for my 12 chicks, the dust in the house is gettting bad, and they are starting to stink! We love our chicks, but we are ready to move them out. The inside of the coop is finished, and it's beautiful - I will post some pics soon! So is there any reason...

    New Coop Vents - Pics

I think we should be well vented! There are 2 vents on the front and 2 on the back, and then windows on each side. All the vents and both side windows will be covered with hardware cloth. I love hubby's pull-cord design! And there are magnets on the vents so they stay shut when you close them.

Yay - the new coop is almost done! - pics

Hubby has done a great job! Our chicks are two weeks old, and the new coop will be ready for them! Just have to build the outdoor run, and finish up the inside. I'll post some more pics when it's finished. The forum was so helpful in perfecting our design!
