When I discovered my 2 black Cochin banties were sitting in a nest with 14 eggs, I was shocked. I had no idea which were old and which were fresh. So I gathered the eggs and hens into a basket and gave them a spot in my side of the big coop. I have hatched using the incubator, but I enjoyed this...
Any opinions on breed of this 8 day old chick from MurrayMcMurray? It is very tiny with no feathers on its yellow legs, and the wings have bits of dark grey. Thanks!
Here are the results from incubating my first purchase of shipped eggs. Received 14 and went into lockdown with 5 eggs. These 3 Cochins hatched in the last 2 days and I still have 2 to go. There are no pips yet on day 21. I'm hoping they make it.
I bought 6 chicks on Friday, but one died today. I think I have 2 Silkies and 3 D'Uccles. What do you think? All are bantams, have feathered feet and straight combs. The white ones are not all white. There are some yellowish areas and bit of gray shadow areas. Is this typical of white birds?
I hatched 15 chicks from a mixed collection of hens. They are all quite different but this little guy is even more so. See the feathered legs with the black and the rest of the foot is yellow? This is the only black and white one. I do have 2 splash/mottled blue/black bantam cochin roos but...
Yesterday was day 18 and I locked down the incubator. At noon today I heard chirping and went running. Would you believe this chick had hatched and 2 more have pipped out of 17 eggs. What happened? Also notice the pink legs, can I assume my EE roo is not the father? My only other roos are BLRW.
I started this coop with a plan I found on the internet, checked out the supply list, set a budget and my family started building. The guys wanted more supports underneath, more framing, insulated windows, door, and walls. This required paneling to cover. With all this, I decided what's wrong...
If I crossed my Cuckoo Marans rooster with one of my dark egglayers, could I possibly get chicks/hens that would lay the really dark eggs? Or is the egg color determined by the female breed with no input by the male. Hope this makes sense!
I saw a pip yesterday and look what I found this morning! My first try and I am so excited. This is the first of 21 eggs ( 3 cochins and 18 EE) I set on March 26.
I have 26 laying hens and 6 nests, but everyone wants the same nest! They crowd 3 or 4 hens in the one nest and the others actually stand in line. This morning I had enough, so I stapled tea towels to 5 of the wooden nest frames like curtains. Would you believe I had 4 eggs in one of the nests...
