I have 5 SLW hens and 3 GLW chicks about 5 weeks old. Chicks have been housed in sight and sound of the hens but physically separated so the hens don’t hurt them. I’m starting to introduced the hens to the chicks and the two lowest ranking hens peck the chicks each time I try to introduced them...
I have chicks around 5 weeks old who are on grower feed specified for chicks up to 6 weeks old that they have just about finished. My boyfriend came home with a bag of finisher feed specified for chicks 10-18 weeks. Is it okay to feed them this even though they aren’t 10 weeks yet? I don’t know...
I read somewhere that chicks feather in quicker when kept cooler while chicks kept warmer are slower to grow in their feathers?
Is this true?
I’ve been looking back over progression photos of my SLW hens from last year and my GLW chicks do appear to be getting feathers quicker.
For context...
A few months ago I took a friend’s lone remaining SLW hen as the rest of her flock had been killed. I do not know the specifics of how this bird was kept/raised, but it is very different looking from my own SLW hens. Her body is very slender and her body feathers are raggedy on the edges...
Hey everyone! I picked up 3 new GLW chicks for my flock yesterday. I’d like your opinions on their age. So far they only have their flight feathers in, everything else is still down. See photo below.
Hi everyone.
Today I was gathering my hen's eggs when one of them slipped from my hand, hit the edge of a board, and cracked. The egg is still intact and none on the albumen is seeping out. I immediately took it inside and put it in the fridge. I also didn't wash the egg beforehand as I wasn't...
The thread title pretty much says it all. How high can a chicken with clipped wings jump? I want to be able to maximize the space in their run, which is ~6ft tall, by placing a couple roosting bars around it. How high would be too high for them to reach? They are SLW.
The pictures are of my friend's hatchery SLW chick approx. ~5 weeks old. Pullet or roo? The legs seem thick to me and the comb has some red color. I've heard that males don't have much of a tail at this stage though and this chick has a big tail like my SLW pullets. One of my same aged pullets...
I've been pretty lucky so far with my first every chickens. The chicks have all been healthy and active. No pasty butts or any other issues. However, I'm paranoid that my good luck will end one day and I'll need to treat some problem or another. My question for you all is, what sorts of things...
I got 4 SLW chicks last month from the feed store on around May 20th, I don't remember exactly which day. They definitely weren't day old chicks, but I don't know their hatch date and I think they had different aged chicks all mixed together anyway. I'd like some opinions on their approximate...
I'm not in the market for purchasing hatching eggs, but the other day I came across several listings for hatching eggs on eBay. I'm super curious, is this a fairly normal and validated way to purchase eggs? Would you trust buying hatching eggs from eBay? It just seemed so strange to me, but I'm...
Any idea what breed this chick is? It's some kind of bantam. These pics are a bit old and the chick has almost completely lost all of its down now. I can't get a good pic now because it is very flighty and doesn't let anyone get close. However, it is still the same pale yellow in color with no...
Guess I'm supposed to say "hi" or something since I'm new here. So... Hi! First time chicken mom (though the boyfriend has raised them before) and I'm looking forward to watching my little chicks grow, and eating fresh eggs.
New chicken mom here. I'm curious if there's any correlation between chick coloration and adult coloration, specifically in Silver Laced Wyandottes? I got four chicks earlier this month, one of which is light/medium gray with a lot of light markings, one of which is black with very few light...
