    Chicken can't walk

Legs are under her, not limp. Wings able to flap. Bright eyed and alert. Eating well. Just can't walk. Marek's is the first thing that comes to mind after looking her over and not finding anything. Tiny bit of blood in very solid droppings (more like regular bird droppings - white with...

    Marans eggs soft/thin and pale?

I gather the most likely cause for her sudden soft/thin, pale, calcium-deposit-covered shells is due to an infection. She was attacked by a fox a few days prior to the first soft egg. She was also laying an egg a day, and laid two the first soft-shelled day. They are back to a normal...

How long do I wait? (Broody?)

I'm new at this. How long do I wait after a hen seems broody to get hatching eggs to put under her? Our eggs are not fertilized, and she's very protective of a wooden egg at the moment. Or my hand if I get it under her. (Not sure if I will get eggs, but I may have to make the choice soon.)

    Labored breathing?

My lavender orpington is panting, her breathing sounds slightly labored, and she didn't eat any cut corn when I gave it out. It's not a hot day, and she had fresh cool water. Looked her over - no injuries, no signs of injury, vent is clean, feathers in great shape. Should I be concerned...

    Post dog-attack behavior

A dog snatched one of my pullets night before last (wrenched the door open, ran off when I came outside), and 4 of my others got minor injuries. Combs are a little battered and one girl got a gouge at the top of her beak. The girls are making sad little cooing sounds, and one of the uninjured...

New layers - where will they lay?

My girls free-range during the day, and only go back to the coop to roost or on warm days for a drink. How likely are they to start laying in their nesting boxes vs somewhere under the bushes?

    Minimum Laying Age?

I've been putting off finishing up my nesting boxes, but my birds are 13 weeks. What is the MINIMUM age they might start laying? Some combs are pinking up, but none as dark as the cockerel's. Basically, I'm wondering if I need to do it on a weekday or if it can wait until I have a free Sunday...

    10 week old cockerel aggressive?

My 10 week old Marans cockerel is aggressive towards the other birds - charges them, and there are feathers all over the run (no one looks like they get picked on more than the others.) He avoids humans, unless we have food, and then he bites our hands (grabs the skin and pulls/shakes). Is...

Talk to me about vines and herbs

I've never grown plants around chickens, and my skill as a gardener... well, "rudimentary" would be complimentary. I am considering growing nasturtium, clematis, honeysuckle, and either Chinese wisteria, climbng hydrangea, or ivy. I have no experience starting any of these plants, and no...

    Docile breeds with wildtype coloring?

Are there any? My husband is most interested in having a wildtype rooster, but we must have docile chickens (and I know that temperament varies even within breeds, but choosing the right breed improves the odds.)

    Suitable for Nesting Boxes?

Would these be suitable for nesting boxes? I'd make a "roof" for them too. https://www.amazon.com/Petmate-Plastic-Hi-Back-Litter-Assorted/dp/B007TUL8Q4/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1514855999&sr=8-4&keywords=litter+box+high+sides Edit: Nevermind - found my answer.

When to move out to coop?

My chicks will be 5 weeks tomorrow, and are within days of being feathered out (only one Brahma with no head feathers.) They are bored in their 5x5ft brooder. I had planned on turning down the heater today and Wednesday, off on Friday, then move them out for good at 6 weeks but... while it's...

    Chicks are Bored - tips?

My chicks are getting bored, and are at least a week from feathering out (only one has any inkling of head feathers). If I don't put something new in their brooder every day or so, they start fighting (not to a dangerous degree, but I don't want it to progress.) They are presently testing...

    Chick stepped on

My daughter accidentally stepped on one of my chicks when my husband was out there with them, and the chick's head is stuck downward, holding it's beak towards it's chest. They are sleeping now, or I'd take a picture. What, if anything, can I do for the chick?

    Deep red EE chick?

2-3 day old chick, the color of an adult RIR. She's an EE so she could be any adult color - I just am looking for an idea of what similar chickens have turned into. Closest I've seen via searches is a partridge rock chick, but they have lighter chests. Will post picture ASAP.

    Winterizing help

Most of our storms come from the south west, so I built my coop to have full walls facing those directions, no solid wall east, and half a wall north. The north side is well protected from rain, but not so much on wind. I'm in South Carolina, so it's not like it gets SUPER cold, but... should...

    Show me your poop boards?

Trying to figure out the best way to do poop boards for my own small coop, and I'd love to see examples.

    Easter Egger Cheeks?

Is cheek fluff the norm for EEs, or would it be equally normal to get an EE without the tufts? I know they aren't technically a breed, so tuftless happens, but I'm interested in how common it is, just for curiosity's sake.

    Winter brooder - help?

Pine bedding under a towel, plus a cozy coop heater (not yet purchased.) The U-Haul box tucks under the corner, so there's about 4 layers of cardboard under there. Any other advice here? I need to keep my chicks in a brooder until early-mid January, so I had to have a bigger brooder. I've...

    Marans temperament? (MPC?)

Everything I've found says that Marans are typically friendly, docile birds - except MPC's breed info on them, which lists them as not especially docile. Which has me worried. I ordered a blue splash marans cockerel from MPC. Anyone know about their splash Marans temperament? Marans in...
