Keeping chickens out of you garden...

http://www.amazon.com/Contech-Electronics-CRO101-Scarecrow-Motion-Activated/dp/B000071NUS/ref=cm_cmu_pg_t Planning to buy one and thought I would share. Cheaper than a fence and I know my hens do not like the water hose at all.

    hens on strike

I had a flock of 4 hens. One orpington, one barred rock and two ameraucanas. All were laying just fine. I recently added a jersey giant pullet and sussex pullet. There was some tail feather pulling, then the orpington went broody, things settled down - But now they have stopped laying. It's...

    Order eggs?

I have an orpington that went broody a few days ago. Last time she stayed broody for a few weeks. I have no rooster. Should I order a few fertile eggs from mypetchicken and let her sit on them? Seems like an ok way to maybe get a rooster at the same time. Thanks for your thoughts

    mulch pile

A mulch pile needs to be turned and chicken poo helps the process along. Any suggestions on how to build a mulch pile the chickens can get to while not allowing the birds to scatter things all over?

    how many hens

This is my hen house - http://docs.google.com/View?id=dhfhv5dx_41ggckn5hs I live in Florida so even in the dead of winter my birds are outside. The run in the plans opens into a large pen so there is plenty of outside room for 6 or 7 birds. Can I use this house for that many birds? They only...

    Mulch

I have chickens and I have a garden. I frequently feed my hens table scraps. Is there any reason I can't have my mulch pile in the part of my yard reserved for chickens? They can dig through it. Eat what they want. Ignore the rest? Thoughts?

    back from broody

I had a hen go broody. I didn't do anything and after a few weeks she got over it. She is now out and about every day, no longer sitting in the hen house. It's been almost two weeks though and still no eggs from her. Is this normal?

    opossum

I live in an urban area. The mall is just two blocks away. I haven't bothered to lock up my hens at night because I'm lazy. Got a 6am wake up call this morning and found a very small opossum in the hen house. I guess I got lucky and I should probably lock up the hens. I saw a few stray...

    Broody

I have 4 hens. Two are EEs about 10 months old. One is a black and white one and th other is a gold colored hen. These two are older and they have been laying. Just a day or two ago the gold chicken stopped laying and now sits on the eggs the other hen lays. She also acts like a psycho...

    pine straw

I have pine chips in my hen house which houses 4 hens. I have fenced the hens into a good size area on the side of my yard but it is all pine straw. I could easily rake it out and leave them a dirt area. Would this be better? Can pine straw harbor nasty bugs? They do have a small sand pit...

    chicken pool

I have fenced my hens into a smaller part of my yard. It just so happens that there is a small concrete pond (koi pond) in this area. Right now it is empty except for the leaves that fall in. Is there something I could do with it for the chickens? Maybe a chicken sand box? Ideas???

    Fence

I have 4 hens in my backyard and a run big enough to accommodate them. It's about 50 sq feet. The chickens are roaming around my backyard and its getting to be a problem as I have small kids and the hens poop everywhere. I have a large portion of my backyard I can fence off (much larger than...

    questions from a newbie

I just finished my coop this weekend and we went and got 4 hens from a local farm. Two are adults and two are a few months old. I purchased some laying feed from our local feed store. I live in an urban area (right in the middle of town) but I have an old house with a larger back yard and we...

Finished Coop - Here are the plans

https://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AbYrnXCOG7r6ZGhmaHY1ZHhfNDFnZ2NrbjVocw&hl=en I'm keeping 4 hens in here. The hen house is a little small for 4 but they are generally out of the coop wandering around the yard and I live in Florida so they are never confined to the hen house all day. Total...

    Coop plans - Free - Really :)

I've been building an A frame run and hen house. I'm just about done and I created a small document with somewhat detailed plans. The plans are not complete just yet and I need to take a few more pictures as well. Let me know if this looks like it makes sense and if you have suggestions or...

    Feed / Newbie

I just about to go get my first three hens from a local farm. I need to buy some food. What feed do you guys recommend? Is it just as well to order online or should I head out to the local farm store?

Space per chicken / Door size

I'm just about done with my chicken coop and I have one or two more questions. My run is an A-frame and is 10 feel long by 5 feet wide. I'm not sure I'd call it 50 sq feet as the chickens really can't use the last 6 inches or so on each side; the ceiling is too low. I'd probably call it 40...
