    Egg bound or broody?

I am new to having chickens (got them last year) so this is my first layer "issue". One of my Orpingtons has been in the nest box since yesterday. It looked like she was trying to lay an egg and she was all puffed up. She was still there and still puffed up this morning (with no eggs, I remove...

Red roost mites... do I treat the chicken or not? Discard eggs?

I bought some permethrine powder(Garden and poultry dust) and I cleaned out the nest boxes and put a little powder in there and then put new pine shavings on top. I checked the birds skin, and they don't look irritated at all. I can't find any bugs on the girls. I only happened to see a few last...

    Metal waterer stinks!!

Even after a good washing, even after soaking in a little bleach. It will be ok for a day after the good cleaning, but then just stinks. (It never was like that at the beginning) I stopped using it and want to get a new waterer. What should I get?

They won't go inside at night!!

I have 8 chickens. They are 2 ages, 9 weeks and 12 weeks. I put them out in their coop about a week and a half ago. Their coop is house-ish, with an attached run. There is a ramp. I open up their coop, and they go down the ramp. The first 2 days I was catching them and putting them to bed at...

    Pullet or Roo? Pictures

This one has much more red in the comb and waddle. Also is bigger than the rest and has thicker legs. But doesn't look roo-ish to me, not that I have any clue. such a cute face, though....

    Last ditch effort... antiobiotics?

for my chick that is losing weight for no apparent reason (I posted previously) who has healthy flockmates, normal poops, and seems otherwise fine is either going to die anyway, or I don't know what. But no one seems to have any ideas, so someone suggested I treat her with antibiotics because...

    Chick losing weight.... FTT?

Our 6 week old Buff Orpington hasn't grown in over a week. In fact, she lost weight. I started them on vitamin water and apple cider vinegar. I separated her from the other three and put her in the small brooder to see if she was pooping, and she is. The poop is smaller than the other chicks...

    We're losing her.... UPDATE 4-14

Our Buff Orpington hasn't grown in a week. In fact, she lost weight. I started them on vitamin water and apple cider vinegar, and I finally separated her from the other three even though I had never seen her be pushed out of the way of the food or water, but what can it hurt? Poor things called...

Did I poick up the wrong grit?

I got hi-cal parakeet grit.... I see it has oyster shells in it. The thing is... every bird grit at out TWO petstores had oyster shells in it. I do have chicken grit and it looks like gravel, but the chunks seem much too big. I tried to grind some in my coffee grinder but I broke the coffee...

Sounds strange, but.... cold chick feet?

My runty chick always has cold feet. I think simething might be wrong with her. She is considerable smaller than the other three, but eats, acts healthy. I just notice every time I handle her, her feet are cold. The others all have warm feet. She was smallest to begin with but she just keeps...

    Pullet or Roo? Pictures

What do you think?? She's feathering out way slower than our other 3, but is the biggest. I have no idea.... I googled and couldn't tell from pictures. this chick is so funny looking! Just really awkward. The whole time I was trying to get her picture, she was running around the table chirping...

    Slow growing chick....?

I have 4 chicks, and one is growing much slower than the others. She was always the smallest, and IS growing, just not as fast. She's eating, drinking, flapping wings, playing? Do they play? She is acting 100% like the other 4. They are not bullying her, or pushing her away from the food. I'm...

Is my Black Australorp a boy?

Because she's growing feather's slower, and her tail is sticking up in a roosterish way. I say this as a complete noob. I really have no clue. So, is she just a late developer, or is my little butterball a boy? Whick would be so sad because we can't have roosters in the city. Here's a video...

Had to make a bigger brooder! pics

They were not happy in the rubbermaid tub any longer, so we built a 42x24 brooder with room to flap wings, and they are actually PLAYING and running around! I used door screening because I didn't want to deal with the hardware cloth, and they are inside the house so I figured it'd be ok for a...

Pics of chickies!! How do you know they are healthy? Help!

We have 4 chicks. They are all supposed to be 4 weeks old today! The Rhode Island Red and the Americauna are MUCH more feathered than the Buff Orp and the Black Australorp. The one I am concerned about is the black one. She just seems to be more tired than the others. She is active at times...

How much room do they need in the brooder? Cage? Help!

I have them in a little rubbermaid tub and it seems to be getting tight. I have 4 chicks and they are supposedly 3 weeks old, so ... how much space per chick do they need at what age? I want to make them something a little bigger, or buy a pet cage, but I want them to be able to stay in it until...

I know this will probably get me made fun of in my own circle......

But you guys will understand! This is Butterball and she (I hope it's a she...) likes to hang with me and read BYC. No poop on the computer, but I didn't let her stay up there long.

3 weeker with what looks like plucked butt feathers?

I got my first 4 chicks today, and the buff orpington has scraggly tail feathers and no feathers around her vent. It does look like there was once feathers there... there are a few little feather remnants, I suppose. I don't see any bugs on her or anything.... she eats, drinks and seems happy...

If they were cold.... if they were hot?

I have 4 chicks, 3 weeks old in a rubbermaid tub with a heat lamp (250 watt red bulb in the feed store can) They lived in a barn in a horse stall, and had a brooder, but they had a little door that they could come and go out of. And lots of them were in and out. It was about 60 degrees today...
