Im considering getting chicks, but Im worried that it will be too cold to put them outside by the time that they are old enough. I live in Rhode Island so it can get pretty cold even in October. I just wanted to make sure it's okay to expose them to the cold weather so suddenly.
thank you!
Recently, my rir has not been looking that good. She is a middle aged hen who has recently stopped laying. She is lethargic and tired-looking around the coop; and I can tell that she has had a massive loss in her appetite ( I can tell by how her crop is completely empty). Her butt also seems...
I have been having this problem for a while now. my easter egger hen has been limping for a few months know and both of her feet have gone completely limp. I have tried giving her vitamins and other medicine but I'm afraid they have not made a difference. Today I noticed that one of her toes is...
My Easter egger, who is an older hen has been having many medical problems. We rescued her form a fire, and we do not know her exact age. For the past few months, many medical problems have risen. First, she is limping, and it appears that on of her feet is completely lifeless. She walks on this...
Hey everyone. This is my relatively old Rhode Island Red hen. (We think she's 2-3) Just today I've noticed a dark, small spot on her foot. It is not firm, like common bumble foot, but I can't figure out what else it might be... a cut maybe? There is some redness around the spot. (the picture on...
For the 7 months I have owned my chickens one of my Easter Eggers has always been limping and sitting down a lot. I did some research to find that she could have botulism; a sporadic disease.
I have a small coop and a small flock of 3 hens. I clean my coop every two to three weeks as well so for...
I live in New England, and It was a very hot day yesterday. My rir and EE where gagging without noise! They constantly sat in the nesting box and kept gagging, and My thought it was because of the heat. I gave my 3 chickens TONS of cool water and and my coop has a roof for shade and lots of...

it started out with only one of my birds being picked by my "top of the pecking order" rhode island red. on my ee, there was originally vent picking, but now there is picking...
As you may have seen before this thread, I posted on how I have a large marble sized bump on my Easter Egger, and ever since then, the size has only progressed. the large bump on her comb has become redder, larger and has a small new white growth on it. I have heard it could be a tumor or a...

They often try to get out so My family and I where planning on building an edition to the coop, because the run is small, and they do not seem too happy.
Any seggestions for designs/ ideas for the project?
ever since I switched, because of their incredibly thin eggshells I had to give them oyster supplemented food. My chichkens are not fond of the switch. I used to give them oyster shells and grit in separate dishes on the side, but they never touched it. I used to feed them organic. Any...

Just today I found her large bump on her comb, about the size of a small marble, to be scabbed up. This is kind of normal, because the past few weeks, the ladies have been picking her fluff feathers bare around her vent...
