It's been around 2 months since we've had steady eggs and have had zero for about 1.5 months.
The 7 hens are a mix of Polish and RIR's all same age (18 months or so)
They all are in various stages of molt with the Polish and on RIR all completed for the most part.
Question is how long after...
She (1 yr old RIR) has been lethargic and pale comb for a few days. No mites for bugs that we can detect and the rest of the flock is healthy, active with no signs of illness, it's only her.
She would eat a little yesterday but not today
She just dropped this stool and it looks like an egg to...
just out of the blue one of my polish hens(just turned 1year) died on the roost last night.
No puncture wounds no signs of scuffle, she was laying under the roost with legs straight back.
The coop is Fort Knox at night anyway so NOTHING got at her and there were no peck wounds.
No bugs...
Two of my Polish Hens are losing feathers and getting sores from mating with the polish cockerel who's spurs are really starting to emerge.
They are all same age, coming up on 1 year old. Not sure on what size saddles to get. Medium or bantam size.
I've read one review that the bantam size...
For the first time every hen produced an egg today. I had 4 browns from the RIRs as usual and got 4 white eggss from the polish.
Two of the polish were laying sort of regular and one just kind of quite. The other one layed her first today.
Very noisy backyard today. The hens of course were...
my wife dug up our old radiator heater from the basement and said she wants me to put this in the coop on nights it’s single digits and below.
I’ve been in talks with this women for months of the dangers of heating the coops with the bulbs and such but I can not come up with a legitimate reason...
And a few in the flock of 9 have the runs.
They are all very active and eat well no signs of sickness other than the poop and the RIRs combs look like this.
All seem to be laying eggs fairly regular even with the shorter days.
None are sitting in the corner or not participating, they all stay...
I have two pullets laying eggs tonight. one very new to laying, a polish, and on RIR that has been laying about 2 months.
I woke up to all kinds of commotion from my rooster, I mean he was loud in order to wake me.
Ran out thinking I have an assault on my hen house but I see the polish on the...
Well it’s 7am, 11* outside
The pop door has been open 1/2 hour and there was no movement. He’s usually up and about by now.
So of course I quickly go out to check and they’re all just now coming down off the roost.
The cockerel looks at me through the window and gives a hearty doodle do...
I have a mixed flock of laying hens, non laying hens and a rooster (might possibly show some day).
I've been feeding them layer feed the feed didn't state what percentage calcium was in it but it did state that it was only 16% protein of which I wasn't really happy with for their feathers
I...
Had the flock out today as I was working on the electric in their coop.
Heard a crazy squawking coming from one of the birds and came running out.
A hawk, I think it was anyway, flew off from the middle of the yard and I immediately start counting birds, one RIR is missing!!!
Then she...
I read everyone who doesn't wash their eggs leaves them out on the counter os some other. Is there a reason why we don't refrigerate these unwashed eggs.
I have googled and cam up with no other reason than "not necessary" If that is the only reason why not to then ...Why Not?
Is this feed okay for roosters to eat also.
I got the wrong stuff. I meant to get an all flock and put the oyster shell on the side for the hens, which I did last time but I got 3 bags of this by accident.
Also should I take the oyster shells away now.
Is it normal for young pullets to start laying for two days and then have nothing on the third day.
I guess I mean is it normally sporadic, do they normal start then stop again when they first start laying eggs.
I have eight hens (4-RIR, 4 Polish) and found three eggs today.
Two were in the nest box, one brown and one without a shell ( I put out calcium today)
The other was laid from the perch this morning, it broke on the fall.
We got these chicken a week before Easter and they're our first flock...
