We're new to this...and all WAS going well for a while.
Now we're getting a lot of poopy eggs, some of the hens butts aren't so fluffy, and getting some loose stools...as well as 14 hens getting their backs ruffed up by a large Brahma rooster...he's got their backs bare a tad...a few are...
I probably should have did a search on this, but I'm pressed for time before I leave this computer behind for the night.
We like to leave our eggs on the counter. We also refrigerate some.
The question I have is:
What temperature water to wash our eggs in if we decide to wash them?
I think...
I am wanting to keep several breeds on our place. We may want to keep as few as 4 breeds and probably no more than 7-10 breeds. Probably as few as 4 birds per breed or as high as 10 birds, not counting roosters. How many roosters should we keep for each breed?
I obviously will be doing some...
We currently have 15 laying hens that we received last June 2018 and they are all laying well. We have a plan to increase our coop and run size come early spring as soon as things thaw out.
We are wanting to get at least 10 more baby chicks to raise and possibly another 15-20. We'd like to...
I'm new to chickens and we've had a few pecking issues. I know space is likely the issue and I'm slowly addressing this issue.
The birds have feed in feeder and get scratch grains each morning...sometimes lettuce, pumpkins, other items like corn cobs to pick at.
Just tonight I bought a heavy...
17 birds...just started laying...getting about 8 eggs a day... in a 11'Lx11'Wx7'H coop/run...just finished sleeping quarters/roost up off the floor or run...3'x3'x8'. Tomorrow, under the roost, I'm going to be adding a 3'x8' wire platform under the roost...essentially adding another 24 sq. ft...
What size nest boxes do you recommend for these large breeds?
What size do you have?
What size do you wish you had?
Maximum and minimum recommendations welcomed.
What size pop door would you recommend for these birds?
I have 12 "other" birds that are fairly large too, but I have 2 Black Jersey Giants, 2 Buff Braham's and a Buff Brahma rooster.
Maximum and minimum size recommendations would be great. This door is an opening for where they'll be sleeping...
There are plenty of feed stores/mills within short driving distance of me, but my fear is that they don't sell non-GMO seeds or organic seed. As soon as I'm done posting here I will be calling them to check and see what they offer in bulk bags. I just thought some of you may have alternative...
If you have discovered mites like I have and you clean out the shavings in the coop won't the mites continue to live in the compost pile?
I love the thought of composting the manure and shavings and I am doing so. However, I worry that the mites will not be killed through the winter or during...
From another thread...
Old dog kennel...
… with an old roof.
What you are about to see is built purposely so that all panels can be moved to a new location for a more permanent chicken coop/run.
This entire design was partly my idea, but mostly thought through by my dad who isn't...
...they are missing their tail feathers, but it looks like down is still there on 2 of the 3 with the 3rd one having bare skin.
We have a mixed flock of 17 birds total...16 hens. It seems that I have 1 buff brahma hen and my buff brahma rooster that are a little bare and a golden laced...
I just moved my birds from my garage and from their way too small coop to a new covered coop/run. They've been in the new coop about 4 days now.
I am new to raising chickens and was wondering how long I need to leave these birds in their new coop before I can let them out to free range? Do I...
In a day or so I'll be ready to move my birds into their new coop which is located underneath a block shed overhang complete with gabled roof overhead, concrete floor, and 3 walls of PTwood framing with 1/2" hardware cloth. The concrete pad itself is 12'x12'. There is a sidewalk on two sides of...
...for my nearly 3 week old birds (17 of them). https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/newbie-needs-some-advice.1255712/
Going to build it tonight and tomorrow. I need it to last for at least one month while I'm working on he coop/large run and other things.
It will stay in garage, but can...
First, read my introduction to this site here... https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/new-member-from-sw-ohio.1255550/
I'm new here and really haven't had a lot of time to do a lot of searching on this site, just yesterday and today...and I joined today.
We...I made a mistake and ordered...
Actually just found this site yesterday, June 25, 2018 and absolutely love it...wish I'd have found it before ordering chicks.
Yes, we're first time chicken owners, 17 of them...born June 11, 2018.
