    Crushed chicks

Had a horrible surprise this morning when i went to feed the babies. There were 11 dead chicks on the floor. They had not been pecked but seem to have been trampled to death. When I checked on them again in the afternoon, there was another victim. They have plenty of room and it is definitely...

    Chicken Tractors - floor issues

We want to run our pullets out in the orchard this spring/summer but have serious predator issues (coyotes, racoons and eagles). So we're going to put them in tractors but we're not sure what to do about the floor. We want them to be able to forage and dig for bugs but we notice that with the...

    Eye/Sinus Infection?

One of my leghorns has some kind of infection. The area all around her eye is extremely inflamed and there is yellow and watery discharge coming out of it. She also has discharge coming out of her nose. There was a little blood in it today. I've been irrigating the eye regularly and treating...

    First turkeys... total newb!

So 5 turkey hens just kind of fell out of the sky so I thought I'd see if I could fatten them up in time for Christmas. They're only 8-10lbs now. What's the best way to get some weight on these girls in the next few weeks? Also, I need to decide if I'm going to keep them with the chickens in the...

Just showing off the new girl... Mottled Houdan

This beautiful girl adopted me a few weeks ago. I went with a friend to pick up his new chicks and she jumped into my arms, snuggled in and stayed there so I had no choice but to take her home. She's so beautiful and just the sweetest thing! We named her Bissous which is french for kisses...

Buff Orpington & Silver Laced Wyandotte... girls or boys?

These are supposed to be girls but the Buff has a larger comb than the rest of the girls and the neck feathers are longer and pointier. The Wyandotte just looks awfully red in the face to be a girl... whaddya think? They're both a couple of months old.

    One Uuuuuuugly chick

I wanted to post some pictures but I can't find the cable for my camera so you'll have to use your imagination.... I have a 5 week old Chantecler that looks like it was beat with the ugly stick. She has a crossed beak and seems to be forever stuck in that in-between fuzz and feather stage. She...

    Will crossed beak get worse?

I have a Chantecler chick with a crossed beak. Compared to what i've seen online, it looks pretty minor but I'm wondering if it'll get get worse as she grows. I tried to take a better pic but my camera batteries just died. You can see the slight crossing in this one though. She's the white...

Polish girl... I hope... but maybe not?

Our polish girls are about 10 weeks old now. They're all supposed to be girls but the silver laced has me wondering. She is very people friendly, very bold/adventurous, and definitely the alpha of the pack. We introduced 3 new chicks, all of which were bigger than her today and she was...

Buff Orpington babies... hopefully gr8 city chickens!

Just showing off our babies We picked them up last weekend. Sadly we lost one the first night but the remaining 9 all seem happy, healthy and strong. We're only keeping one of them but our friends and neighbours are scooping up the rest. Vancouver just passed the new backyard chicken bylaws so...

    Small chick with big attitude

My polish babies are about 7 weeks old now and spending most of the day outside. Today I decided to let one of the lower ranking hens in for a little visit with them. Cricket (the runt with the punk rock hairdo who is super friendly) marched right up to the hen, stretched herself up as tall as...

My chickens and I were on the news last night!

    Super friendly chick

One of my polish chicks is SUPER friendly and getting more friendly every day. I can't even open the cage without her jumping on me and making her way up to her preferred spot on my shoulder. Last night she put up such a fuss when I tried to put her back in the cage that I let her watch a movie...

    Broken toe

One of my 6 week old Polish chicks has a broken toe about 1/8th of an inch above her toenail. It wasn't severed through so I took her to the vet yesterday to see what he thought but I'm pretty sure this was his first chicken patient so he really wasn't sure. We decided to splint it as best we...

    Cukoo for cat grass

We have a pot of cat grass on the window sill for the cat and I've discovered that the chicks go absolutely crazy for it. I'm using it as a training tool to get them to come to me when called. Works like a charm! They love it almost as much as worms and that's a LOT!

    Me: 1, Staple Gun: 0

Since the dog managed to get through the fence I built this morning, I went out to build a stronger, more better version this afternoon. Neither of my staple guns would work. Can you imagine trying to staple on chicken wire when you have to hold the staple loader in with one hand and press down...

    Awol

One of our Hamburgs has gone missing. They both like to visit the trees and neighbours yards so we decided to clip their wings to keep them closer to home. We caught one and clipped her and were going to do the other one yesterday but she took off before we could do it. She wasn't back last...
