I have 8 California White (CW) hens. I love this breed for their laying rates and their low feed to egg ratio. Nowadays who does not want a hen that eats little but lays an egg almost every day? How can I keep this breed going? Which rooster do I need? What would I get with a true breed...
My 1 yo California White (CW) is officially broody. Never expected her to be a mama as the breed are egg laying machines. At first my silkie went broody in the main coop, biggest nest box. After three days I moved her, nest box and all to a separate pen. I noticed a CW just kept staying in...
Hi group. Question.....I have a hen, this is her second summer, that refuses to leave the nest box. It's been more than 8 weeks. She no longer acts broody, screeching and puffing up. Just stays in the nest box. I'm worn out from taking her out of the box many times a day. I've had to...
I use fermented layer feed for a mixed flock of one roo and 5 hens. My question is can this also be used for three week old chicks, all pullets? Also, I know the roo to hen ratio is low. It was 1:7. Hoping this will work out until the 14 pullets mature in the fall.
BYC - is there any way to remove or a setting to avoid animated emojis? I get some people think it's "cutesy" but for those of us with eye issues it's a matter of health. I can't read when there is spastic movement buried in the thread. Or deleting from a thread when they are used as an avatar.
I'm looking for 55 Flower pullets OR the breeder I found last year on FB selling 55 Flower chicks. I no longer have a FB account. This breeder was in the central part of NC.
Edit: I know there are online breeders but am leery of using the USPS right now to ship day old chicks so I'm hoping...
After reading all 14 pages of the original post on frontline I have a few questions.
1) It's been many years since the OP question was posted. Are there any updates on the safe use of Frontline on laying hens?
2) If the majority of users still recommend this product what is the egg withdrawal...
I gave my little black polish hen a bath today, her beautiful white head was a dirty brown, and while drying her found what I determined was a very bad infestation of lice under her wings. After recovering from the shock and bleaching the bathroom, and hot water and high heat wash and dried all...
Can I use a Double Door Metal Dog Crate as a hen house? I am basing this question on my old coop which was basically an elevated, three sided, partly enclosed, roofed, open floor design. With this in mind, and wanting a sturdier, non-wood coop, I was thinking a Double Door Metal Dog Crate with...
Would anybody know where I can buy a pair of Blue Ameraucana this time of year? I would like a male and female pair but will take an extra pullet. I'm in eastern NC.
My BSL started laying an egg a day about two weeks ago. Out in the open the first two days! I put her in the nest and now she knows where to go. She's very tame and I can put my hand under her and capture the eggs in the nest, even from other hens. They like the same nest. I have a EE who...
I'm thinking about getting hatching eggs of the breed I want to start raising, using a silkie broody hen. They will be separated from the main group but still visible. through a chain link fence. My question is will the chicks, full size Blue Wheaten Ameraucana, change pecking order status as...
Hi. I'm looking at a resin storage shed for 3 silkie hens that I want to keep separate from my full size, territorial, chickens. I have several questions.
1) How many cubic feet should I plan for the hens and for their broods?
2) How tall should the shed be? I'm looking at either a 6x4...
I have two white leghorns, same age from TSC, one with white ears and the other with yellow. One is laying (yellow ears) the other is not. Both are 6 months old look almost identical with the exception of the ears. "Yellow ears" has a slight lemon yellow cast to her feathers in bright sunlight...
I'm curious if anyone has had what looks to be an EE and silkie mixed pullet. She's 21/22 weeks old. I just can't figure out if she's anywhere near time to start laying. With a blue/burgundy comb and little bitty wattles, blue'ish ears, I can't go by the usual tell tale signs. That also...
Esther, my ISA Brown pullet, is pulling out her long tail feathers. I caught her doing this yesterday. She is not eating them, but there is mess in my yard (they free range every day). This started after we had to re-home a "she" EE two weeks ago, that started crowing almost all day long...
5 day old EE pullet was the most happy and inquisitive out of all my 4 other week old babies. This morning she started shaking her head and sneezing. There was no nasal discharge, eyes and nose were clear. Her crop was not full. She was active, eating, drinking pure unsalted well water with...
I live in eastern North Carolina, zone 8a for reference. I have two RIR's about 5 years old. And am now the proud parent of 4 Buff Oringtons, about 2 weeks old. I've used this resource for a while now and figured it was about time to join the conversation. My question, will Buff Orpintons...
